£15 extra on car fines

As if we don’t pay enough in car tax, fuel duty, speeding tickets and the like. We will now have a "victims tax" (surcharge) imposed on fixed penalty fines:

Anyone who breaks parking regulations, contravenes a stop sign or speeds will be forced to pay the penalty. It could also be levied when a vehicle has dirty windows. Ministers say that they want to extend the payment to all types of fixed penalties. At present, only errant motorists who are fined in court for more serious offences are liable to pay the surcharge.

Under the new regime, the minimum fine of £60 for speeding or not wearing a seat belt would rise to £75. And a “penalty notice for disorder” for drunkeness, criminal damage and shoplifting would increase from £80 to £95. Many motoring offences would attract the new levy. These include having a tyre with insufficient tread and having windscreen wipers which fail to conform to regulations.

It’s outrageous. Another stealth tax to help prop up government spending. Gordo screwing motorists again, will it never end.

How does parking in the wrong place, say for instance in a zone on new years day, create £15 of damage above the fine you are already paying?

I love how self-centred motorists are (though to be fair the article doesn't help), that when additional fines are being considered on every fixed penalty notice, which applies to tons of non-motoring offences, it's ZOMG stealth tax on motorists, we're so hard done by :p

Well, adding this to proposed fuel tax rise (+15p) within the first 2 months of this year, implementation of more speed cameras, and reduction of 60MPH limits to 50MPH... you can see that there is a trend that we are the easiest port of revenue.

Yea, screwing those motorists with bald tyres who park on double yellows.

DAMN THEM TO HELL etc.

Indeed, if you don't want to pay the fine, don't break the law ;)

So the charges would go to victim service organisations, I assume to help run them rather then direct to victims, ho-hum.

I also like the comment "They say such offences are not "victimless crimes" as thousands are killed or injured on Britain's roads every year and others have their lives ruined by anti-social behaviour." As far as anti-social behaviour is concerned, shouldn't they be dealing with the actual cause rather then the after effects? We've got some gypos round my way who have recently moved in and even though their faces have been caught on CCTV nicking lead off the roofs os some flats the police don't seem to be able to do anything. These same louts will push and bustle you as you walk by.

Many of the motoring FPNs are for decriminalised offences, which means that this stuff shouldn't even apply.

As a population, we are hard done by with a combination of stupid laws and stupid taxes. This proposal can easily combine the two, pass a stupid law then collect pointless taxes from those who fall foul of it...

you do realise they stopped compulsory victim support payments to prisoners in open prisons who work out and earn real wages because of a challenge under human rights
