I'm thinking of possibly upgrading to a Conroe and am undecided on which graphics card to get.

I currently have a Leadtek 6800GT that is louder than a jet plane and would really love something much quieter. Would also like to go the ATI route for once as I have always gone nVidia.

I've got ~£150 to spend, and am undecided on a X1900GT or X1800XT, what do you guys think, or should I just get something completely different(nVidia...)?

If you can find a 7900GTO for 150 then definately. Otherwise a 1900GT is a good buy, and will leave you some left over money. Or you could wait for the X1950Pro that's coming out soon, if OcUK stock them.

Both cards are good buys.
The X1900GT gets best performance in games like Oblivion (shader intensive).
Generally though the X1800XT is the faster card.

If you can up it to £170 the X1900XT 256MB is the best buy. :)

X1800XT 256 is faster than the X1900GT. Faster stock and even more so overclocked. I didn't play one game where the X1900GT was faster and that even includes Oblivion.

The top performing 2 cards for the money are

GTO 7900 512
X1800XT 256

GTO is the card to get if you can afford it

I may get accused of a bit of fanboism here, but I'd go for the X1900GT myself (I have two :p)

Especially the HIS version. Mad clocking card. Mine overclocks all the way to standard X1900 XTX speeds (thats 675/775 from 575/600) even though the memory is 1.4ns (rated to 700mhz). Of course, ymmv, but I kept pushing this card....

Overall i managed to get to 700/800  flat with 1.45v to GPU and STOCK on the RAM. I benched the card in 3DMark06 and it hit 5700 with a pants (compared to conroe) PenD 805 @ 3.66ghz.

I probably could have gone even further, as my testing wasn't showing any real limits at this speed. After benching, I went and played FEAR for 4 hours solid.

Thats a heck of a card :D

PS Tomshardware has updated VGA charts, so go have a look at their graphs for some interesting comparisons.

Nice clocks. My 4 Sapphire X1900GT's were very poor OC's and would not even reach XT speeds.

I think the credit has to go to the HIS cooler on the thing - its massive, shrouded and well designed.

I did of course remove it and get rid of the gloop that came on the card - AS5 everytime for me :D
