Thats when the facelifted model with much improved iDrive system (Hard drive for music and maps, higher resolution screen with better interface) and improved exterior styling was launched. The prefacelift one is beginning to look like a cheap car these days (Which it is, given it starts fom £5k for a tatty one now) whereas the LCI still looks pretty good.
Having owned a 06 320D just after a 55' 525D, then a 59 330D and now back to a 06 320D, i really don't see what you're saying, the interior is better but i actually don't have a preference to the looks of the 06 or the 59, found them both nice looking. I find the new 3 series horrible looking. Because you say it looks that way to you dosen't mean its the same for everyone. I will be getting a new shape 5 series at some point in the next 2yrs or so though.
Fox is just a tool, some old keyboard warrior.
From his reckoning the Fusion is just a 'bigger' Fiesta because its based on the same chassis. The Saab 9-3 is just a Vectra. The Mito is just a Punto. An Abarth is just a Fiat.

What was the issue?

Jesus, what a step down, in both the looks department and engine department. I'm sorry, but the E90 pre-LCI is an ugly looking car from the front. It is a trainwreck of sharp edges. The LCI however makes the E90 look how it always should have done - the LCI looks fantastic. Most of the time, when BMW do a facelift/LCI to a model, it features very subtle changes like slightly smoothed out headlights, or LED taillights and different shaped wing mirrors etc etc - however this, thankfully, went out of the window when the LCI'd the E90.
I tell you, if i had bought a 08 E90, then 6 months later they bought out the LCI i would have been raging.

Im sure it must be my imagination but I always though the A5 was a larger car compared to the A4. In know it sits on the A4 base but thought the A5 was more XF and 5 series size.
Nothing to back that up other than seeing them parked up so it was just a guess.

Actually thats exactly what a Fusion is.
These are more complex - they are platform sharing ventures rather than the 'same car'. There are lots of similiarities and shared components but it's not the same as the situation with an A4 and an A5. The A5 is an A4 Coupe, it really is that simple.
