In a lot of situations, especially at social gatherings I find myself sticking to my Sigma 30mm F1.4 all the time, mainly because of it's low-light ability and reasonable view angle.

However I often want something wider, but my 17-40L at F4 often can't get enough light and lacks that nice shallow DOF. So I was thinking of trading up (or along..) to the 17-55mm IS. The way I figure it I get F2.8 if I need it for decent shallow DOF, the IS will allow me to shoot in lower light, and I get that extra reach which is handy.

It seems better in every way from most reviews, apart from the lack of weather sealing.. which I hope won't be a problem

I have one, I love it.

I was thinking 17-40L but the IS and F2.8 swayed it.

Its just as sharp as any L (according to people who have both!)

So yea, I would! :)

I used mine in the snow the other day, did have an umbrella though but still managed to get snowed under !

Sharp lens, good lens!

Excellent, looks like my 17-40L will be up for sale then :)

f2.8 to tickle your excitement :)

I'd be tempted but its in the EF-S mount :( I'm looking to upgrade to a full size sensor later in the year so would have to sell it.

What other alternatives are therye to the 17-40mm that have a lower F number?

there's the EF 16-35mm f/2.8, but its much less sharp than either the 17-40 or the 17-55.

if you're going to upgrade to full-frame, then you might want to look into the 24-70 f/2.8 :)

Based on your requirements, I'd say the 17-55 f/2.8 IS would be ideal for you

Go for it! :)

bobbyboy uk need's to post me his keyboard for that, will be cheaper postage wise than me posting my lens since it weighs more :p

Also WTF are Canon smoking, £30+ for a lens hood (EW-83J) - I just ordered a clone from ebay for under £6 !
