YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z77M-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £86.99
1 x Intel Pentium G850 2.90GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £64.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX) £29.99
Total : £193.37 (includes shipping : £9.50).

This would be your best bet.

The pentium will destroy the FX, and the z77 will leave a nice upgrade path to SB in the future.

Also 8GB RAM>4GB RAM of course.

I'm a noob but wont the 3.6GHZ quad be faster than that intel?

Thanks

Have a read of some reviews on Bulldozer. You'll soon see that it (FX-4100) is actually slightly slower in most games than the Pentium dual core G860 (link)

It also uses a lot less power at load. Also by getting a Z77 motherboard you leave yourself with a decent upgrade path to i3/i5 and i7's and have the ability to overclock.

That's not really how it works in this situation.

The G8xx pentiums have been tested to be better than the FX8120s by Tomshardware, so this will definitely be better.

Aswell as the upgrade path, and the extra RAM, it'll be much better.
Also, Runescape is well known to have a memory leak in the application, so the extra RAM will be useful! And it'll make everything that much smoother.

I really don't read into this stuff as I'm not really into performance hardware tbh.

Having room for future upgrading is certainly appealing though. You genuinely think the budget is best spent on the hardware you suggested?

Thanks

Yes. :)

edit.

Not to mention the second hand market will be flood with socket 1155 CPUs for the next few years. Bulldozer was a massive flop so didn't have many takers.

Thank you. Will they all be fine with the current 580W Hiper PSU I have for the moment? (As said I'm planning on upgrading it ASAP, the same time I get a GFX Card.)

Will that mobo run my current 4850 GFX Card fine?

Thanks

Yea, for the uses and budget that option is a good one.

As has been mentioned the G820 is a pretty quick CPU and the Z77 board will allow an upgrade to any LGA1155 (Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge) i3, i5 or i7 CPU. It also allows overclocking on CPUs that support it (ie. full multiplier unlocked overclocking on K-series CPUs and limited overclocking on standard i5 and i7 CPUs).

Though personally I would spend the extra £3 and get the full-ATX version of the board.

So to recap, it's

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-387-IN

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-094-KS

And all of those will work with my current older components (Hiper 580W PSU, 250GB Sata HDD, 4850 PCI-E GFX Card?)

Thanks

Unless you intend to overclock just get a cheaper motherboard and a faster CPU such as Core i3 2100. Even OEM Core i5 CPUs can be had for under £120 if you shop around. All Intel CPUs under the Core i5 are multiplier locked and cannot be overclocked.

The Gigabyte GA-H61M-D2H-USB3 can be had for under £50 and is an H61 based mATX motherboard which has 4 RAM slots.

A G850 is a false economy IMHO,as a Core i3 2100 will have a longer lifespan. Newer game engines are starting to utilise more threads now and the HT of the Core i3 2100 will be useful in the longterm.

Edit!!

Also a Pentium G620 has almost the same performance as a Pentium G850 for a much lower price too.

That is a good point, as you mention it all depends on whether the OP really wants to upgrade his CPU and overclock in the future. But as you say, you are basically trading off performance now for overclockability later by going down the pentium/Z77 route.

At the moment you can get a low end (but still perfectly functional and ivy bridge supporting) H61 motherboard for £36. Add in £30 for 8GB of RAM (the kingston kit is great) and that leaves £114 of the £180 budget for a CPU. For this price you could get a i3 or even a second-hand i5 (like the 2300 or 2400). If the OP is willing to spend ~£20 more then he could even afford a brand new i5 2300.

This option would give you much more CPU performance now and in the case of the i5 - twice as many cores and the benefit of turbo boost. This chart compares the performance of a Pentium G850 and an i5 2400 in a range of tasks.

The H61 boards don't support overclocking and don't have the nice features of Z68 or Z77 boards (like many PCIE slots, SATA3 and USB3), but they fully support all LGA1155 CPUs and are cheap to buy.

The motherboard I mentioned has USB3.0 and for under £50 it does look like the best mATX H61 motherboard:

Edit!!

The AMD alternative would be an FX4170 or Phenom II X4 965 and a Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3:

A Core i3 2100 is faster overall I suspect, especially due to its performance in lightly threaded games. It would be a good starting point IMHO,if you intend to run newer games.
