If you're poor and it matters to you, check road tax and real economy figures for these old cars.

Lots will almost be £300 in road tax and give 20-25mpg.. while only producing 180hbp and a no torque surge

Quite a shock when you compare them to modern turbo diesels will hit 200+ bhp, cost £35 to tax and do 50mpg on a run

True. Then the DMF fails or the Swirl flaps go or the high pressure fuel pump lunches itself. Loads of threads here and elsewhere where modern diesels have suffered mechanical failures costing hundreds, sometimes thousands of pounds to fix.
