Seen this locally and thought this might be the place to ask the question.

540i BMW tourer. 150K miles. Automatic.

What price should I pay and will the MPG be single figures? Would a grand be to much or too little. For reasons I haven't worked out I do quite like it (buckets of space, leather, etc) but its the automatic box that really puts me off.

I've drove the 740 auto hard and the fuel gauge showed 0mpg, was quite impressed :D

(I think it was the 7 series anyway, I'm not too hot on the BMW models)

Well, figures that i have seen online point to 13-17 us gallons per mile.
This works out as 15-20 uk gallons ish.

I have had 16.6 combined out of my m60 engined e34 over about 12 thousand miles since i got it. (forgot to say, its a 530)

From single tanks i can get upwards of 23-25 on long runs :)

Cheers, didnt see it.

Well, the autobox on my 1995 530i is really quite nice, im inclined to beleive its the same unit.

I would pay a grand for one, provided it was in good nick and running well. Nikasil is not an issue with these engines after 95, so it should be an alusil block. Fox, back me up/knock me down here?

Yeah, late 1995 models had Alusil bores. Still need to be careful as it may be a late registered model. However, saying that most Nikasil models are no longer running or have had their mills replaced.

Me neighbour had one of these and he did say it was thirsty. He replaced it with a Mondeo ST24, and he also said that was much slower than the 540 and it drank almost as much fuel!

As the fuel that caused the porblem is no longer available, don't worry about a Nikasil block - if its got to 150k miles, I doubt its going to fail now due to the Nikasil issue.

Just check it isn't using masses of oil (at that mileage, chances are it will use some anyway) just keep it topped up and avoid short trips like the plague.

£1k for an e34 540i sounds right if its tidy and has some history.

personally, I'd offer him £700 & see how he reacts.

Thanks for the info.

Think I'll give it a miss. TBH its far too big for my needs.

I've seen an A4 Avant I quite fancy anyway :)

If a 5 Series is far too big, you really dont want an A4 Avant either - the A4 Avant is only approximately 20cm shorter.

And the e34 is the better of the two imo.

Did you try that 540i ?
