1st time mmo

WoW is a great game just dont lose urself in it make sure you still leave the house for some social time with IRL friends. Pick a server that you feel you can enjoy pvp/pve/rp also you might want to do some research in to what is the dominant nationality on the realm as even though its an english speaking realm a lot of ppl do not do this but some are better than others.

I don't reckon so. Try to think back to your very first mmo experience, ever. How long did it take you to figure out who was a player and who an npc? Eve doesn't stop you attacking anyone or anything, or looting any can labelled 'free loot!' You know, the kind that's left outside every noob station by welcoming players :p

At least break yourself in gently on some of the basic concepts and get used to the etiquette before tackling eve.

Why not go for one of the Free to play MMO's instead of a pay per month game.

Off the top of my head, Lord of the Rings Online (Lotro), EverQuest 2 and Dungeons and Dragons Online are now free to download and play. Each game is well established over a number of years and community are arguably more mature, helpful and cooperative as a result, while the game experience and merchanics are polished and have had enough time to settle balance issues.

Just downloading the game now, So im not actually sure whats all available. yeah cheers for all the info guys seems the general consensus is that wow would be a good starting point. ill see how it goes! :)

Good starting point, yes. Good ending point, no.

If you are going to try one then I'd recommend DC Universe Online. It's quite a lot of fun and different, interesting PVP modes and is packed with content and there is more to be added soon.

+1 for DC, WOW would avoid not that its a bad game its just old now and you will always feel miles behind

Quite a while, those UO players used to come up with not only sneaky names but even mimicking the way the npcs moved in order to entrap people :D

Indeed, I still remember in my first five minutes online, being asked if I would cast an armour potion on someone for them.

I did it too, and then wondered why they had exploded and then killed me :)

I know you didnt ask for it but if you want to try a Super Hero MMO then I would strongly recommend Champions Online. It became Free To Play like last week, and I have been playing it pretty much solidly for these past few days. It is amazing. The customizability is really good too, there are sooo many variations to pick from.

I find it truly telling and depressing that playing one mmorpg can be considered similar enough that it is 'practice' for another.

Well playing one FPS can be considered practice for any other FPS, of course the games are different but there are gameplay fundamentals which remain the same: aiming with the mouse, WASD movement etc...

Bearing in mind he's never played a single MMO before any game will introduce him to the genre with fundamentals such as using skills and hotbars (although not in EVERY mmo), the social aspect and trading with others...

mmos are rubbish imo i just cant stand the 1995 graphics which they are made with to maximize customers with older pc's.

even that star wars game coming soon looks like something from 1998.
