Is it worth buying the 5.1 if i'm only going to place all the speakers in front of me on my desk?

Lol, of course not.

Your best option would be some Hi-Fi speakers and an amp to process the signal from the sound card, but 5.1 with all speakers in front of you is sheer stupidity. I think that deserves another "lol":

Man speaks the truth! Unless you have the space for it there really is no point to 5.1. I'd spend the same amount of money on either a good 2.1 setup or do what I have and trawl ebay for an amp/2.1 speaker solution.

For £150 I got a Technics V8660 (I can't be arsed to turn round and look to see what it really is hehe, and a pair of B&O Beovox 3800's).

I bought some chepo Labtec pulse 485 but they are decent quality actually
I don't view a pc as something for movies or music if i want to watch a film i burn the xvids to dvd and bung in standalone and watch on lcd tbh.Spending a wad on pc speakers imo is daft just get cheapo but half decent 2.1/2.0 separates for music lcd screen for movies all the gaming i do is on headphones it's much better on 5.1 headphones.
