Lloyds are now charging to use an agreed overdraft. As soon as you go £10 into your agreed overdraft they hit you with a £10 (i think) fine, and interest as normal. I also think they hit you with more fees for every day you are in your agree overdraft, for up to 3 days.

This is coming into play next month. I have £1000 overdraft but have never used it.

I wasn't being confrontational but just merely replying to your comment.

Haha, and I wasn't trying to sound confrontational or accusing you of being confrontational.

Offtopic, but I heard it said that when you write something to be read in an e-mail or online, if you perceive it as "positive", the reader will likely read it as "neutral", and if you think it is "neutral", the reader is likely to think it is "negative".

What annoys me is banks who deliberately let payments go through instead of refusing them when there's no or little money in the account just so they can charge you overdraft fees

Or just don't go overdrawn.

No sympathy for you, although if you go and speak to them nicely then they will probably just let you off.

I recall a few years back i checked my balance on a friday morning, took some cash out, remembered i had a direct debit coming out on the monday. So i went to the bank on a saturday and put most of the cash back in to cover the DD only to be told that it wont matter as the DD had all ready gone through and i had been charged £30 or what ever it was. Even though the money should have been in there as a paid cash in before the DD was due to come out, wasnt best pleased. One more thing that caught me out once is that unless you take money from the banks own machine ie natwest/rbs etc it may not show up for several days afterwards so the balance onscreen may not be the actual balance.

I got O/D for a small amount about £5 with co-op and all they did was send me a nice reminder to let me know about it. No charges incurred.

You should threaten to change banks and join Co-Op much nicer

i'm also with the co-op, much nicer bank, they give you a £10 buffer on their standard current account and the two times i've been in to it i've received a phonecall the same day to let me know this.

mind you keeping an accurate check on your spending is a much safer way to do things, i have an excel sheet mapped out for 6 months in advance which includes all the bills i have to pay, neccessary expenses (phone, driving lessons etc) and how much i save, then i can jot down expenses as and when beneath this, all totalled up in the box at the bottom, i never spend more money than i have this way.

Banks should not allow unauthorised overdrafts imo. If there isn't money in the account, then money/DD/SO etc should not be authorised. It's a banking strategy to allow those who do not keep a tight check on thier finances to go overdrawn then charge them for the 'service'.
