I thought I would combined 2 questions into 1 thread.

1) I was given a bottle of spirit of my choice (Sailor Jerry) from a store in Kidderminster yesterday for helping to catch a shoplifter, the other driver also got the same. Was I wrong to accept this?

2) I use my iPhone as a sat-nav, didn't before, as I was only a mate. Passed my test last week. Problem is, the battery is usually flat before I start my return journey and have to rely upon the old AA Road Map. An iPhone in-car charger is a little expensive, but I have found this (Akasa USB Car Charger) on OCUK site. The wagons at work all output 24v to the 'port' in the cab, will this device work fine or would it have adverse effects on my trusty iPhone? OR should I just invest in a proper sat-nav, i.e. Snooper, or a trucker specific one?

Many thanks.

What Squirrel said. The iPhone is decent enough for on-foot navigation but it just isn't quick enough to be a reliable in car satnav. I tried for a few months before giving up and getting a cheap tom tom which works fine.

1) Why would you not accept that....?!?!

2) I've never had any problems using my iphone as sat nav, the co-pilot and tom tom apps are both great, as long as you have a screen mount it works great.

1) No

2) That USB charger will be fine, it will atleast maintain the battery rather then draining it while in use.

Current smartphones are better then any dedicated satnav unit as they offer live searching for points of interest. The GPS chips in them are perfectly good unless you have something old like the iPhone 3G.

Cant see why you think you were wrong to accept a reward for what you did?

The raw cost that it was purchased in for will be a lot less than the retail value so its not as big a deal for the shop. Plus think how many bottles get damaged and cant be sold etc. Drop in the ocean etc.

Good choice on the SJ

We used the Tom Tom app on the iPhone in the US everyday and it worked perfectly.

iPhone 3GS, I use a combination of Google Maps and Nav-Free. Works ok, but Nav Free keeps freezing or dropping GPS signal.

HGV Driver?

Be careful if blindly following a sat-nav route. Not all routes are HGV friendly!

I know this from when I was a mate, Leek to Biddulph in a 26ton wagon, down a 7.5ton route, as it was all we could do, sat-nav sent us the wrong way...

I do have my sat-nav on the iPhone set as HGV/RV, so, in theory, it should only send us HGV routes... Not had a problem yet...touch wood.

Thanks for the advice anyway guys, I will buy the adapter and if I experience any problems I would buy a proper trucker sat-nav. Bloke at work has a Snooper, 7inch screen by the looks of things, proper truck-nav.

I use my iPhone with TomTom most days at work, it has never let me down yet, nor does it suffer speed issues. I've never had to use my normal TomTom unit since buying the phone. A charger is a must obviously.
