sorry to create YET another thread in a already excited graphics forum but i wanted to ask about my mother board compatibily with the new 5850 cards

i recently purchased a MSI P55 GD80 mother board with this i shall be adding a i5 750 or a i7 860 (depending which overclocks better)

My aim was to perhaps buy a 5850 now then add another at a later date

ive read the mobo will NOT run 2 x16 lanes but rather 2 x8 lanes ?

will running the two cards in only x8 lanes seriously cripple them ? or would the difference over x16 lanes not be that noticable ?

I assume the bandwith use of 5850s won't exceed 8x PCIe 2.0 lanes... The 16x is a limitaton of the on chip controller, the board is simply a means of connecting the two, to my understanding. Anyhow 1 card will be plenty for now!

As far as I know [email protected] v 16x16 with a dual card setup, there will be insignificant performance difference due to the extra bandwidth of the PCI-E 2.0 spec, reviews on the net show some difference in FPS in a select few titles " crysis " when using max 2560x1600 rez.

According to the techpowerup article that KillBoY linked too, it might not be an issue at all, (although thay failed to do the obvious test to see whether it affected crossfire).
