2 x 8800GT SLI or 1 x 8800GTX

8800 GT SLI would be much faster than a single 8800GTX.
But obviously your board needs to have 2 full size PCI-E slots and support SLI. What motherboard are you using?

There are _ways_ to get SLI support now on many boards that don't officially support SLI... but no guarantees.
The extra VRAM and memory bandwidth on the 8800GTX is nice especially if your playing at 1920x resolutions... but most 8800GT will overclock to match or beat the 8800GTX aslong as they aren't VRAM limited and 2 of them in SLI will leave the GTX far behind in most cases.
EDIT: As you can see from benchmarks above at 1280x often the SLI setup suffers from being CPU limited and at 1920x tho still faster the effects of being VRAM limited are beginning to show so they are optimal for 1680x type resolutions.

from experience with 8800's in sli don't bother, save the money for a better higher end card

i went from 8800GTS to sli, now GTX 285 and think 285 is a machine on 99% of games, crysis being the 1%

Stick um on Fleabay, and get a 5850 over a 285, or possibley keep a 8800 and use it for physX.

I went from 8800GTX SLI to a single GTX280 and found performance was mixed, some games ran better, others didnt, but the space saved in the case and less power consumption made it worth it.
Even so, it's your best option, as it's better to have a single gpu that is as fast/er than 2 smaller/older GPU's and all the problems that go with multi gpu setups.
