Quick question, which would be better (gaming perfomance wise), 2 x 8800GT in SLI or 1 x 8800GTX?

This all might be academic as my board may only support crossfire - then I'm scuppered!

2x8800gt will be much better in gmaes that support SLI, even in games that don't it won't be that far behind. I think the 2 8800gt's (similar to the 9800gx2) are about as good as a GTX260.

There are _ways_ to get SLI support now on many boards that don't officially support SLI... but no guarantees.

The extra VRAM and memory bandwidth on the 8800GTX is nice especially if your playing at 1920x resolutions... but most 8800GT will overclock to match or beat the 8800GTX aslong as they aren't VRAM limited and 2 of them in SLI will leave the GTX far behind in most cases.

EDIT: As you can see from benchmarks above at 1280x often the SLI setup suffers from being CPU limited and at 1920x tho still faster the effects of being VRAM limited are beginning to show so they are optimal for 1680x type resolutions.

from experience with 8800's in sli don't bother, save the money for a better higher end card :) GTS 280 at least if you can afford it

i went from 8800GTS to sli, now GTX 285 and think 285 is a machine on 99% of games, crysis being the 1% :(

yep but I already have 2x8800gt cards, but only got a quad in a crossfire mobo - do have an old 3800 x2 system sitting around so could use that to SLI.

I went from 8800GTX SLI to a single GTX280 and found performance was mixed, some games ran better, others didnt, but the space saved in the case and less power consumption made it worth it.

2 8800gt cards is a lot better. To be honest though, the 8800gtx is getting on a bit now and so are the 8800gt's. Why not get a newer card?
