Hi chaps, my dad is after a sound system to go with his new 42PX80 TV in a small living room. His requirements are:

  • £200-300
  • preferably available from a physical retail store (but not a necessity)
  • used for TV, DVD and music (music the priority hence stereo)
  • floor standers preferred over book shelf speakers
  • potential to connect various DVD/Blueray devices and games consoles

Thanks for any advice :)

Cambridge Audio A5 and some Tannoy Custom should do the trick. The A5 is 60w per channel so will handle most moderate floorstanders fine, and has 4/5 stereo inputs, only downside is no remote. Available from bricks and mortar too.

Hmmm, maybe import a small child then, very good at being remotes, although need a lot of learning :D

£300 is a tight budget, and I would naturally recommend 2nd hand stuff, but that can be far too much effort for some people.

Definately get a stereo setup, then in the future if he wants to go surround sound he can add the extra speakers and just get an av-amp. Check out the tannoys listed above, there is a sound shop that is richer which should stock the sort of things in this price range ;)

Unfortunately am not sure what stereo amps come with a remote, the ones I've looked at before always tended to be 'manual' whereas AV amps tend to use remotes, although I'm pretty sure there are exceptions.

There WAS an Onkyo 2.1 set that might also suit your needs, HT501X or something, but I really have no idea how that'd compare to a decent audio setup, probably not too well, I've never had the opportunity to listen to it; however given Onkyo's value AVR I can't imagine it'll be anywhere near a decent 2 channel stereo amp. On the other hand it'll be better than a cheap mini hi-fi!
