The time has finally come and I am getting my first car in a matter of weeks but I am still unsure on what to get. I am 30 this year and have learned to drive a little later in life than at 17 but better late than never. Im a tall guy and also I dont like fiesta's. Any suggestion would be great. I will post pics of the car I buy.

Im in the same boat, im 28 and just starting to learn... :) I also dont like Fiestas and other small ¨Boy racer¨ type cars... so instead ive opted for a old shape Mini... unlike you though im a short arse so probably wont look too odd in a Mini.

Something like a Focus,1.4 or 1.6 Golf? Polo? 306?

I listed the above because usually their cheap to insure and the majority of peoples first cars that arent boy racer-ish :)

not trying to sound like the stereo type but If I was your age I would go for something larger like a mondeo you should be able to get a V6 for that money, not normally a supporter of the mondeo 'crew' but insurance will be as cheap as chips and you will have plenty of space, failing that I would go for a larger rover, a vitesse or an 827 although I think you would have trouble spending as much as £2000 on one

I have been looking around and am having trouble finding anything in my area to honest. I'm looking at auto's btw. Last week I saw a lovely Focus for sale not far from me for just over 2k but it has been sold. Mondeo seem big but maybe to big going from a small car to a mondeo maybe a bit much for a new driver?.

Ah, OcUK car recommendations, I see the guy has already been recommended a 2.5 litre car for no apparent reason whatsoever :p

Mondeo is a good choice but the V6 is daft, it attracts higher running costs for no real benefit for most drivers. Go for a 1.8 or a 2.0 if you want a Mondeo.

All sound cars for £2k to be honest, plenty of room in them all. If you don't want a saloon thing then go for one of those hatchbacks.

its not for no particular reason, I hardly imagine he wants some slow pos and he didnt want a small car as stated in the first post... I have heard good things about the mondy v6 it was only a general suggestion. btw Op if you want auto and luxury and dont mind the rover badge a 827 would be perfect, mostly auto's cruise control climate control, trip computer on the older models electric seats and windows etc and really very cheap but its only of benefit if you like rovers :p

My recommendation would be to stretch the budget to 2.8-3k and get a decent condition focus on about an x plate. Theres loads around, so don't be afraid to haggle with sellers.
