would say approx £5k myself with the mileage

when your 21 with 1 yrs ncb contact greenlight insurance they offered me insuarance on a 172 at £950

Ah, you liked my suggestion then? :p

The weakest areas on the 172 are the exhaust and the gearbox. Check to see if either have been replaced. With the gearbox, make sure that the change to each gear both up and down the box is smooth with no crunching or being difficult to select. With the exhaust, if you can, get down underneath the car and listen for blowing as well as carrying out a visual check of the general condition. If either have an issue, it can be expensive - £300 for a catback exhaust and £750+ for a new gearbox.

With the age/mileage of the car, it should have had it's cambelt service done (at 60,000miles/5 years) so ensure it has. If it hasn't, walk away. Other than that, I can't think of much else specific to the 172, just the general checks you would on any car - FSH, paintwork, suspension, interior condition, etc etc. Regarding price I'd say it'd be worth around £4500 tops given the mileage. Obviously knock the price down as much as possible though!

Make sure any test drive you do is of a decent length and with a good mix of roads. There's simply no point in taking a 172 out of a ride and then sticking to dual carriageways. You need to try it on a decent B road if possible to get a feel for the car, how it rides, how it corners etc. Oh and just remember that it'll be a lot quicker than you're used to so be careful!

Have a look at www.cliosport.net for more info. Anyway, have fun and let us know how you get on :)

Less than 4k for that.

I kno of a silver 2001 with 62k on the clock for £4000 ono and its absolutely mint and had all the belts done

Car books at £3100 trade and pay no more than + 700 @ private sale so £3800 max.

Maybe more if it is a really stunning FSH example.

Expect some problems with it though at these miles as it won't have been driven tenderly.

I sold mine on at 30k miles and clutch/gearbox/brakes (calipers)/suspension/exhaust all needed looking at.

Clutches are engine out job (£500 at a independent - £1000 at main dealer), Exhaust are expensive as you really want a renault OEM backbox/mid section or a good aftermarket one not some halfords own jobbie and again expensive and renault ones have a tendency to last a short time (£280 backbox OEM).

Brakes are good and pads and disks are cheap through a local brake specialist. If your calipers give you trouble £££.

The steering wheel can take a beating as it is soft material + poor leather imo and depending on the driver, areas can peel away (not as badly as the MK1s but still don't seem to wear well)#

Alcentara on the seats can fluff up quite badly, use a razor to prune it (yes it works)

The leather isn't the best quality so can get bare faced, Leather repair kits can fix this though.

Best car I have ever owned though. Despite the niggles and french build quality.

My mate really struggled to sell his 2002 Silver 172 with about the same mileage on the clock, he dropped the price to less than £4k in the end, he ended up trading it in.

Sounds a bargain, though it is a year older than the one the OP is going to look at.

Forgot to say its a ph1 so its the "proper" 172 :p

Ph1 172 in Iceburg Silver excellent condition.
62,000 on the clock.
6000k hid lights.
MOT March next year Tax March next year as well.
ITG filter.
Torque exhaust back box.
mk2 side strips and back lights.
16” alloys, some kerbed.
Interior is in good condition although steering wheel has usual wear and tear on it (not very bad though)
FSH, lots of recepits and stamps. Cam belt and Aux belt done last year by Mike at RenTech so wont need doing for another 4 years.
Lowered 35 mill all round (no rubbing at all even on full lock)
Only ran on Shell V Power
No body damage at all
Runs sweet

When I got the car it had a de-cat on it, original Cat was supplied and placed back on the car straight away.

Have original rear lights if needed.

Car is in excellent condition inside and out, whoever comes to see my baby will know that this car HAS BEEN looked after very much.

If you are after more details please call 07941 071 633

after a completely standard car if possible,

sounds like there are a lot of things that can and do go wrong with these :( going to have to give it a fair bit of a test drive, im mainly going to see this particular one so i can rule it out or keep searching for the perfect example (ideally i'd like 60k miles with F|R|SH with the leather trim and everything)

everyones telling me the miles are too high and french build quality is shocking... is this true and should it put me off?

its out at £4750 but they've had it on for 4 weeks and its not moved.

Which is too long really IMO. They may have had enquiries, but at that price, for whatever reason it hasn't sold yet. If it was really worth buying, it would have sold by now. Fair enough if it checks out OK, and they may drop a bit in £££, but if not, there's plenty more where that came from ;)

Whatever you do, don't be impatient and jump on a car because you're tired of waiting. Just look every day and something will come up soon.

Ive never heard of 1*2 gearboxes giving up thats a new one on me.....

Only real things to check as already mentioned are that the belts have been done (Cambelt and Aux belt) nd that its been serviced properly.

The backboxes have a tendancy to rot straight through the pipe and eventually drop off but its only a backbox and shouldnt put you off a car.

The suede/leather interior wear quite well, the steering wheel tends to show wear a lot more so if its a high mileage car and wheel loks in good nick its probably had a new wheel.

£4750 is at least £750 overpriced imo for that clio.

Find another example mate.

just off now, i'll give it a test drive so see if the car (make/model/size/speed/etc.) is right for me either way, i know its not fair on the seller but if their price was right i'd be interested

Cheers for the tips guys

.

is that the general situation? if so thats actually quite shockingly bad. i was advising a mate to look into a 182. maybe not...
.

That is a shock at that price. £3100 for a phase II 172 cant be right, even with those miles.

I'd say around £4300 would be an excellent price if its got FSH.

Try privilege for insurace. They insured me on a Clio 182 for just over £1000 at 21 last year. (2 years ncb though)

Greenlight would not touch me because of my liverpool post code.

too small for me :( i felt trapped inside, and was fairly dissapointed with the lack or torque, seemed to pull well above 3500rpm and wanted to be revved

thanks to all who helped :) the search continues :)
