Red Bull test driver Robert Doornbos became the first person to drive a Formula 1 car at over 200mph on a Dutch highway on Tuesday.

The Netherlands native was apparently asked by Red Bull to reveal a childhood wish he would like granted and thus a section of the A7, one of the countries most flat and straight roads, was duly closed.

As he stormed across the De Afsluitdijk dam which divides the IJsselmeer Lake from the North Sea, Doornbos is reported to have clocked 326 kph (202.6mph).

The 24-year-old ended his dream run with a wild and smoking demonstration in the town of Den Oever.

"Wow, this was really cool!” said Doornbos.

“I had driven De Afsluitdijk already several times in a passenger car, but this is far more exciting!

“When Red Bull Netherlands asked me at the beginning of this year if they could help me fulfilling one of my childhood dreams, I immediately suggested that it would be great to drive a F1 car over De Afsluitdijk.

“Today I did, and it even exceeded my expectations."

They must have some power to close the roads for something like that

Though I'm more impressed with Red Bulls input to historic aircraft, they have a large fleet in Austria and one interesting aircraft under restoration in the States:

i really admire the red bull brand and all the events / teams / individuals that they own or sponsor.

im surprised that redbull can afford to lavish so much money on these kind of promotional activities. i know they are prominent at uni campus's etc but i just dont see they can sell THAT much redbull to make it worthwhile!

they have money to spend on a F1 team (infact 2 f1 teams) for a start, as well as the red bull air races, birdman events, extreme sports events, loads of sponsorship deals etc etc etc.
paying for a small stretch of road to be closed in promotion of the F1 team wont have cost that much money at all in comparison ;]

no thats what i dont understand, im not particularly asking about this run

but how do they finance 2 F1 teams, all these corp sponship of racing/"EXTEReme!" events etc from the sales of a softdrink.

AFAIK sales are actually waning on these kind of stimulant drinks so where is the supplemental cash from?

the money comes from the personal pockets of Austrian billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz,

hes an F1 nut and just funds all of the F1 activies from his own pockets

think of him as the roman abramovich of F1

prior to buying jaguar he was a key sponsor.
