2016 : A Pivotal Year For AMD, Nvidia, PC Gaming And VR

For VR to be truly worthwhile, you'd need dozens of graphics cards to run at useful resolutions.

I think there's likely a long-term danger (psychological mostly) in having your eyes look at something so low res with no peripheral vision looking at the real world.

VR now is worthwhile now and we don't even have the CV1 or Vive released yet and no, you won't need dozens of GPUs to run it. I also play for hours on Elite Dangerous with the DK2 and I don't feel I want to go mental lol.

Terrible baseless post lol

By comparison, I've tried both DK1 and 2, and people online all said the DK2 was a massive improvement and that you could hardly notice the screen door effect... It was the only thing I could see, completely unusable. They are saying the same about the CV1 but I cant see how going from 1080p to 1200p is going to make a big difference if going from 720 to 1080 didnt.

Whilst there are a few people who seem positively evangelical about VR, it needs much more than that to become successful.

It will be interesting to see what this "major breakthrough" HTC have made, but if it isn't at least a 1440p screen then I can see me skipping the first gen (or buying and almost instantly reselling as happened with the last two).

The screen door effect (I had to look it up) was my biggest thing but I blocked it out quite easily and from what I am reading, the CV1 makes this so much better as well. I have good vision thankfully and glad I could get past it.

How can anyone enjoy such low resolution literally a few cm from your eye?

I'm not saying it's impossible and exaggerated a tad with gpu power a tad, but still.

Weird innit. I just get so immersed in the game and the VR effect is so well done, it actually feels like I am flying a space ship. I look down where my hands are and I see my left hand corresponding with my throttle stick and look to the right and see my right hand corresponding to the joystick. I fly into battle and see an enemy scurry over the top of me, so I lean forward and look up to see him try and get in behind me. It seriously needs the right games for it to work but for me, it is a complete game changer :)

I must say I so really need to try this VR stuff out, am hoping I get a chance to try without buying. My only worry for myself is headache I get from 3D.

About the tech they is also having to remove the headset for a drink for example taking you out of the game you playing? Greg whats your view on this?
Or what about you sitting in a room with your Girlfriend/Wife or even mates lol
Anyways JackFrags shows some very nice footage here.

So just how good is VR with a decent headset?

Does it completely trick your brain into thinking you're actually in the game, scene, whatever? Or after half an hour when the initial 'wow, this looks real' wears off, does it become just another cool gimmick?

HTC are showing their consumer release off tomorrow I believe. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on that.

I am a massive Elite Dangerous fan and with the DK2, I get fully immersed in the game. There is some caveats like the galaxy map and using a keyboard can be tricky but the pluses massively outweigh the minuses for me and I genuinely can't wait to see what the Vive is all about or just stick with Oculus and grab the CV1. Even games like HL2 work so well, it just makes it like a new game but for a truly jaw dropping experience, you need to like ED.

The TV part I can't remember saying that? I do remember saying my TV was fine for gaming at the time but I always wanted a 120hz monitor setup.

Freesync and GSync I have always said I really want to give it a try I was very interested in trying. Just so happens I also wanted 1440p 144hz Freesync was a bonus and a very good one. Something I was first to say how shocked I was.

Same with VR it is something I really want to try. It's only normal to have questions or concerns.

Like I said bud, not a dig at you and more a dig at people who have not tried it and writing it off.

All you have to do is slide up the goggles and rest them on your head. I have the game mirrored to enable easy typing, so I slide it up and look at my monitor. No stress or anything.

Key word there Maonayze is support. Like you I can see it taking off so long as it gets get support. Mostly it is a few scene demo's and although they are very well done, it needs some bigger games. BF5 with controllers would be epic, Eve is looking sweet already, ED is jaw dropping, even some of the older games like HL2 are very good and people big up Euro Truck Simulator as well (got it but not tried it).

Games coming are:

Sequenced

The Climb

Plus loads more, so it is looking good.

occulus rift shifted away from gaming, and that started as soon as facebook aquired them, while valve kept working and adding new features for gaming, like room maping, and this new "very big breakthrough" that i really wonder what it could be.

btw did you see the game bundled with the occulus ...

Apparently there is 2 games bundled with the CV1 - Eve Valyrie and Lucky's tale.

When you try things like Virtual Desktop, you can totally see why the Rift isn't just for gaming. 360 degree films are amazing and there is a few on youtube worth watching. I have totally been blown away by what I have seen and this is massively in it's womb still, let alone infancy.

I have settled on 4pm tomorrow I will be pre-ordering the CV1. If the Vive is any good, I will also give that a look later on. Love the tech and more of it please. I just need a decent GPU to power it now :D

I'm on site but have put it in my google calendar with alerts from 1 hr to 5 mins before :D

Haha, I am at work 2 - 10 but will be downing tools around 4pm ish :D

Do you know if the Vive keynote thingy is listed on the CES timetable anywhere, can't find anything myself its one cluttered timetable.

I don't sorry but either way, I will be going with the Rift first and later on possibly giving the Vive a turn if the "secret thingy" is any good.

As for comparing 3D to VR, it just isn't on the same level and a comparison only people who haven't tried VR would use :D
