2016 : A Pivotal Year For AMD, Nvidia, PC Gaming And VR

I am not a fair judge of sickness in fairness, as I can go on ships in force 10's and carry on supping my beers while all around me are throwing up everywhere :D (good ol sea legs) but you control where you are going in games, so you are expecting it. If you was to do a rollercoaster sim or summit similar, I could understand it.

Edit:

This isn't AMD Vs Nvidia and something both can use. Leave it out please Andy and give it a rest!

Its called discussion in that it gives you a general consensus of what forum members think of the topic.

If this thread had nothing but positives and VR comes out with everyone in this thread expecting it to succeed and it fails then you think, hey why its failed nobody said they weren't interested in it or that they didnt want it.

What this thread needed was a poll then negatives and positives could be viewed constructively and avoid upsetting advocates of VR who are a bit touchy when someone airs there view that they are not interested in certain tech.

I have no problem with anyone saying they are not interested but repeating it gets a bit annoying. I did a poll a while back for VR but the poll was added very late unfortunately but here it is anyway.

I tried the rather ancient VR headset at Earls Court or Wembley Arena (can't remember) and it worked just fine but after only using it for 10 mins, possibly even 5 mins my eyes were really sore and for a couple of hours after my eyes were bad. I am going back around 22 years ago as well but it did work and the gfx were blocky and I could really see the potential back then but had no chance with what was available in performance wise and technology wise. Move on 22 years and we now have the tech and performance to make this work. I can happily do 8+ hours on the DK2 in ED with no issues at all. No eye strain at all. It isn't in anyway heavy and no different to a pair of cans on your ears for weight, I am a vaper and just slide it up, grab my vaper flask - puff and slide the DK2 back down, the same as I do when having a cuppa, phone goes etc.

I and many others are really looking forward to it but those who are writing it off without even trying it are being extremely naive!

Massive news today from Oculus.

https://www.kickstarter.com/project...-game/posts/1458224?ref=backer_project_update

Anyone who backed their kickstarter campaign for the DK1 will be getting a FREE kickstarter edition Rift. That's a potential 100k+ Rifts out in the wild within a few months.

Kudos to them for this and good news indeed for the backers.

Just read the Vive news and something very interesting indeed. Lots of potential with cameras and I can see some great potential with that. Imagine looking at your room through the goggles and an alien coming through the door lol. I am still going with the Rift but will be keeping an eye on the Vive.

The Wii was a fantastic idea but sadly missed things or at least for me. When they first came out, it was a great novelty for family fun in my house and the controllers did a semi decent job but it just lacked that something and not sure what in honesty.

VR could well be the same and not really sure if it will be a big success but I am begging it to be. I was a big fan of 3d, albeit it didn't really take off and 3D films even in Imax leave me disappointed but that's not say it can't be done better and who knows the future??? 360 films with a slim Geordie La Forge style glasses would be cool.

I have always liked things that bring something fun to the family like Dance Mats, Guitar hero, Wii and for my personal fun gaming, 3 screen gaming, 3D gaming, HOTAs, Steering wheel, EDtracker and ready to embrace any new tech and give it a thorough testing before putting it away. Up until I bought the DK2 I was still 3D gaming, albeit barely because support had slacked but I genuinely feel there is a massive market for VR and like someone said earlier, it isn't in competition with your monitor but another way of gaming. I don't always use the DK2 when I am playing Elite but if I know I can get a few hours undisturbed in, I can't wait to fire it up.

I implore any and all people to at least give it a try and you might even surprise yourself. I will be loaning out my DK2 to friends who have a genuine interest when I get the CV1 and let them have a play and that way they can see for themselves before commiting their hard earned money.

Gregster can you not run the rift as a second monitor and play games such as battle field 4?

That's what I had hoped for tbh, 3d games on a massive screen

Yep, there is a program called Virtual desktop that lets you run games in 3D as well. works pretty well in truth, the downside is the screen door effect but that should be much better with the CV1. I have to be honest and say I have only played a couple of games with it but they all worked (Batman AK/The Vanishing of Ethan Carter/Life is Strange spring to mind).

Imagine floating in space and in front of you is a 220" screen and you can game on it, watch films on it, make it curved, have it flat, make it bigger, make it smaller, change the background.

This program alone is a game changer.

I'm sold.

I have watched loads of films on it and it is incredible. Blu rays are the best and they just look amazing. This is one of the big reasons for me desperate to grab the CV1, the reviews I have read have said how much better the screen door is and that is one of my only caveats with the DK2.

I have the strong impression I'm not gonna be home till just before 5... that's an annoyance to me for some reason. Pre-ordering 45 mins later than everyone else is just unacceptable :p

Haha, I will be at work at 2pm but will be taking my wallet with me and down tools at 15:55 regardless of what is happening :D

hard to say, gonna need to wait for the release of both, and compare reviews.
although everything seem to be similar untill reviewed, Vive seem to be the one with unique features not on oculus.
-Vive have the lighthouses, these are 2 sensors you put in your room for accurate tracking, they help you map the room, set a safe space to move in it, help track the headset, help track the controller motion, and you have a camera that allow you to see stuff while you have your VR headset On, so you dont have to remove it everytime, to get a drink or grab your phone etc.
-oculus have headphones.
not being a jerk, but serioulsy that's the only thing i can think off, that oculus have over Vive.

Vive seems to be more like, put your VR and stand up walk, and use your motion to play, oculus is more like sit in a chair and enjoy.

Edit: both have the same resolution 1080x1200 per eye, and think of it just like a monitor, your pc is still doing all the work

I kind of agree. I like the fact that the Vive has the camera but for me, I will be sitting down as I don't have the room to run around (and I am far too fat) :D

Vive for movement and Oculus for lazy fat people :D

It is pricey but the way it has made my gaming so much more enjoyable, I can justify it. I can understand why people hold off though and I was hoping it would be cheaper for higher adoption rates.

Just seen the price, £530!

Gonna go off to the subreddit and swill some delicious butthurt.

If that floats your boat, knock yourself out!

Does anyone know if the £529 includes vat?

Thanks.

According to my orders on the OR site, it apparently does, so that is a bonus. I was expecting to get some nice VAT on that as well but apparently not

I am really disappointed that it is so highly priced but hope it will come down. I really want to see this tech flourish and to do that, it needs to be affordable and sadly for the most, £500 isn't affordable. Reading forum/reddit, I was led to believe that Oculus would sell at cost but if that is cost, I am even more worried for the Vive

Fingers crossed that mass production costs end up cheaper (which they will) and it then becomes more affordable by the masses.
