Fair play on trying it ICDP and there is a few like yourself who can't get past the res/screen door and I can understand that. Over a short period, I could pretty much ignore the pixels and lose myself in the game.
"would be better with a green logo"
I'm looking forward to seeing reviews though, I might end up waiting for a second revision or pick one up ASAP depending on the reviews.
Wonder how long until we get .hack// (or for you newer kids, SAO) style headsets :O
I know nVidia don't make the rift - that was the joke, but nevermind
Yeah I'm waiting for actual consumer reviews - any reviews that come in now are likely to be a little biased, as you said "keeping friends". Still resisting the urge to preorder, then I see the price and it helps keep my urges in check ;D
And so it begins.
Elite developer Frontier focusing on SteamVR over Oculus

i strongly doubt VR will be proprietary, at least for the 2 first generations, no studio would make a game only for oculus store and leave steam, unless the whole project is paid for by oculus.
i also think that games will be easy to crack for any headset compatibility if that happens.
and most importantly, there is a more efficient way, make unique accessory, and games that takes advantage of that.
steamVR will be open to other headsets, i just hope that oculus doesnt start shiet by doing exclusif content for the rift, i am happy to buy game on oculus store, but i woudn't buy a 2nd headset just to play a game.
Even games that have received funding from Oculus are free to, and are, adding support for steamVR as well
And yeah, there are already a number of 3rd party drivers that can even go as far as getting VR working using an android phone via PC, so just enabling another PC headset should be pretty easy by comparison
If you really are worrying about proprietary then stop buying Nvidia stuff.
You can't - because proprietary. What brand should you buy to say "hey, it's ok to lock things down because I own that brand anyway" and then say the opposite about VR?
Well Closest you can get is with NVidia I suppose, seeing as AMD are quite happy to give 'Nearly' everything they do away to the masses for free.
Disclaimer: This post is a joke and is not to be taken seriously.
*shrug*
Some cognitive dissonance there.. or lack of resolve, not sure which.
"I will say I don't like proprietary, but when a company does it I will buy it because the opposition won't have the proprietary tech, telling them it's ok to do and rewarding them with my monies"
It's an odd line to take, but if that's what works for you ;D
Hopefully AMD's next cards significantly out perform nVidia's so they can claim back some power in the market and influence the devs away from gimpworks - then you won't have that problem to contend with
What? Basically all you've said there is "I ignore all my own opinions. It won't change what I buy"
It's difficult to debate something with someone who devalues his own opinions that much :S
I buy AMD usually, largely because they're the underdog and their business practices are less.... anti-consumer? Granted, I wouldn't do it if nVidia had a clear lead - ie instead of "oh the Ti gets 130 frames to my Fury's 120fps" it was more like "**** nVidia get 100fps and AMD are getting 60". For the sake of 5-10% performance difference I'll support the company that offers a better future for a hobby that I love. It doesn't, as you'd put it, "reduce my enjoyment," but instead works towards ensuring I get future enjoyment as well.
If/When nVidia beat AMD out of existence, stagnation will most definitely occur (see 8800 series) - that's something I don't think any of us want.
I respect that you buy what suits my best. My comment was directed at "I don't want proprietary" and then seeing no issue with buying a product with that in mind.
^ You're directly basing your purchase on access to proprietary tech, meanwhile complaining you don't like it. See my point? I don't understand it D: Like I said, cognitive dissonance. "Proprietary is bad. Which product offers me it?"
No no no!!! I am basing my purchase decision on what works best for me. Please stop trying to think for me when you are so far off the mark. There is so much in life I don't like but I still use it and I don't care for proprietary. That doesn't mean I will cut my nose off to spite my face and again I tell you "I buy what suits my needs and I don't let politics get in the way of my purchasing decision"
Agreed. But a) we all know people who buy Apple products are (removed this for you), and b) is there an alternative that does pay their fair share of corp. tax?
But my point was based on Greg complaining about something while actively supporting it. Not just supporting bad companies
It's not baffling at all, if you buy for the short term and don't mind watching the industry turn into something you dislike then you can buy whichever is the fastest but if you want to try and guide it the way you want then you buy (within reason) the choice you feel is best. For me I bought a Nvidia gpu in my laptop because I felt AMD was quite behind in the mobile gpu department and since you can't upgrade it was a more pivotal decision. When it comes to gaming PC's though I feel there isn't really all that much difference between AMD's and Nvidia's offerings and while AMD being the good guy / small guy is a consideration it's not the only reason to take there stuff. You shouldn't put yourself way out for a decision like that but some lie to themselves about how big the differences are.
For me it's simple, I end up better off with AMD anyway by getting a cheaper 4k freesynch monitor that Nvidia gsynch monitors are too overpriced to deliver at a reasonable cost performance. My overall experience would be better with AMD for the price and the decision to support AMD is still a factor so would have weighed in but it's not like Nvidia fans need to think it's the only factor and it's some moral high ground posturing. It's just a factor still for me, as seen with the fact I went for the 980m laptop though, it's not the only thing to consider but just helps. I'd rather support the industry, support the underdog and support competition (which is better for everyone). To be fair if Nvidia were perfect at performance (recent drivers have proven otherwise) they were massively ahead (gpu's are a bit ahead but overall with the monitor I still get better experience for cheaper on AMD with freesynch) and they wasn't having some annoying experiences themselves (970 vram issues / proprietary tech / overpricing) then sure I'd just buy them with less worry. When we objectively look at each side I don't really see such a huge gap (except for maybe MGPU users but that's not really something I've tried myself and Nvidia isn't doing as great as they used to either). I'm just not the kind of person who likes to commit to being a gump really, never been a big fraudster (downloading movies etc.), never been the kind of guy who likes to scalp people (buy products then flog them fr more when stock is low on ebay etc). Guess it's just a moral compass thing and a lot of people don't really use it much in every scenario.
Don't think you understand what I was saying.
Personally don't see the point in self proclaiming what an idividual is/isn't , it's pointless imo as people tend to make their own mind up and not what a person wants you to think they are.
"Nobody puts Gregster in the corner"
in my best Patrick Swayze voice, of course.
You should get your coat.
