2017 Street Triple RS vs. 2017 Monster 1200 S

I couldn't find fault with the 959 apart from the lack of a fuel gauge
Didn't realise it didn't have a fuel gauge. Will be a little annoying. Still everything else is sublime. Just been reading some news that Ducati are planning to release a Corse special edition 959 in 2018. I just can't wait that long. Will be a bit gutted if it gets Ohlins, downshifter/auto-blipper or the TFT dash. Thing is, any of those will push the cost towards the 1299. Will see. Can always trade in! :)

Pretty sure it has a light and not a gauge :/

I've mentioned that I had a demo on another forum, what amazes me is how people seem to think a lack of colour TFT, single side swing arm & under-slung exhaust is somehow going to be detrimental to the riding experience and enjoyment of the 959?!.

It rides beautifully, so far it is the nicest sportsbike I have ever ridden for fun and comfort on the roads. And I've ridden quite a few bikes over the years! (I'm 39).

I think that a blipper can be programmed to the ECU? I wouldn't worry about Ohlins for road riding, the standard suspension is near perfection imo (and I'm big + heavy).

I've never seen an accurate fuel gauge anyway. I just learn how far I can ride in terms of KM when riding normally and when riding in the mountains and go by that.

I don't agree with you regarding suspension. I will never go back to "good enough" suspension after owning a Tuono 1100 Factory as it makes a noticeable difference even at legal speeds for me.

43 here. Encouraging to hear what you say, especially owing to my limited experience. I only passed my test March this year. Been riding a 125 for 4 years. So this is going to be a bit of a leap (in insurance and performance!). I already have the figures and yes it's eye watering.

RE TFT etc. Just a big fan of gadgets and I do like the dash on the Monster 1200 S which I think is the same on the 1299. The LCD on the Panigale was a little hard to read. Tiny digits. But I guess you get to know where all the info is.

And I do love a single swing arm! Not on the 959 but as before, I can live with that! The 959 is one beautiful bike.

I wouldn't say it's complete BS. The Street is far lighter and more nimble than a big 1l bike.

I've honestly never noticed a bike's weight when it's on the move - my R1 and Daytona 675 felt just as nimble as each other, and the difference in weight between those two, would probably be close to the 1200 and Street. Below 10-15, yes, but over 30 and they're all pretty much the same from my experience; hence the comment re. the 1200 being sluggish under 60 as b.s. imo.

I'm more going off the track day reviews.

In response to this, it's something that 99.5% of actual riders probably won't be able to feel in difference. I used to hang onto reviews about sportsbikes on the track etc, but you get to realize that unless you will be using it as a track day weapon; the nuances they list hardly matter in the real-world.

For me 20Kg is very easily noticeable, but low weight is hugely important for me on a bike. Above almost anything else.

My Tuono was noticeably heavier than my Street Triple.

Source? I can't seem to find any.

An 18kg weight penalty on a 950cc bike wouldn't make a huge impact on overall performance, but 35hp is a heck of a lot more power to have on a motorcycle. Roughly the difference between a 750/1000cc gsxr.

That extra power is definitely usable too, the chassis suspension and traction control on the 959 are superb.

You do realise that power isn't everything, right? Weight is key when you're racing, hence why people take everything off their bikes.

For otherwise identical bikes, then yes of course it matters . 35hp more than makes up for 18kg extra weight.

PS where are theses reviews/tests showing the RS lapping faster than the 959 then? I could probably see it happening on a tarmac go-kart track.

IC3 you're weird. The Street Triple RS is a fantastic bike, but the 959 is clearly better on the track.

Yeah but what you need to remember is unless it's a naked that can do phat stuntz and wheelies n stoppies n more stuntz n stuff then it's crap.

I suspect that a 959 would absolutely positively wreck a triple around a track.

How many times would you rapidly flip the bike left/right on a circuit anyway? Most corners are gradual, sweeping bends where a continual line is held?!

The 959 may be 18kg heavier but it may be better balanced than the triumph. I didn't feel like it felt top heavy or anything, really rather neutral if anything.
