Hi,

I'm thinking about buying a 205 GTi that needs some work doing and well...doing it, so that i'd know exactly what needs doing/is done on the car.

Good idea? Any advice?

Great idea imho, provided you take your time and do it right, just get a good solid rust free car to base it on, pointless spending time fixing up a wreck, oh and no j turns this time ;)

It wasn't a J Turn :)

I'm hoping to get a solid shell, all in good condition :) 205's don't genereally rust, due to their bodyshells being galvanised. Only the earlier ones have some rust.

Watch for the later ones too, I hear the rust protection went down hill towards the end. Make sure you have a proper look whatever age it is, I'm sure you would anyway though:).

tbh i'm not too bothered about the engine - just the bodyshell. As long as its in good nick I'm happy. I'm due a lump of money from a relative, so i may be splashing out on a respray in a year or so's time :)

Anyone know how difficult these engines are to work on?

The engines are pretty easy to work on, certainly in comparison to some modern ones. The main problem I had was space, and that was in a 309. There's just lots of stuff cramed into a small space really. The main thing you should be looking at is the beam. You looking at at least £200(closer to £300) for a recon one if you buy a duffer. Don't worry toooo much about mayo, it tends to build up in the oil filler anyway without HG problems. Front suspension components seem to fail easily, usually bushes going clunk, but they're cheap so not a huge worry.

Those are the main thing's I remember of peugeot ownership.

Is it possible to refurb the beam myself? I'd thought about that as well.

It is possible, but a right PITA from what i remember.. Bushes need pressing in and out.

As Burns said really, the engine is v.easy to work on but you're quite restricted on the amount of space you have to work with. Are you planning on using it as a motorway runner? If not, then get the 1.9 lump and a 1.6 box... useless for motorways but brilliantly quick!

I'm going to be getting the 1.6 due to insurance. although i haven't checked the 1.9 on the insurance front - if its reasonable i'll go for it :)

I'd prefer to do all the work myself with some help from my dad/friends - as i'd learn a lot.

I'm getting it back to it's original state throwing that grill away :) getting the wheels repainted and the dent on the door i did that in temper
