20mb virgin, need a new router (8ports and wired) please help

ah right guess they dont realise how many ports some homes need nowadays hehe but cheers :)

so if i bought a 8 port netgear switch i would be able to connect it to my existing 4 port router... but i guess it wouldnt fix my net speed!

Yep you can connect a switch to the router with normal RJ45 cable and then connect devices to the switch. As you said, it won't increase the router speed to the modem though.

My suggested setup would be decent cable router + any budget gigabit switch. nothing fancy required, you're better off spending less on the switch and more on the router.

My recommedation would be a WRT320N with tomato on. Purely because that's what I have sat behind my O2Box and I've ot had to touch it in so long I've actually forgotten the password I set on it :D (so write it down :P)

On a good day my connection pumps through up to 12Mbit so I can guarantee you it will not stick at 10/half like the current one.
I've just seen a review on a testing site that shows LAN to WAN and WAN to LAN throughput above 120Mbps. So it'll handle 6 of your internet connections before it creaks :)

noobie question: :) can a wireless router be used as wired ? all my gizmos are wired and i have never trusted the security of wireless. not sure if there is a wired version of this?

many thanks for all the patience and advice
