24-70mm f/2.8L

£800 new sounds too good to be true!

I got mine last year for £985 new from Kerso on the bay and that was cheaper than anywhere else.

check out camerapricebuster.co.uk for other new prices but I'm sure none will come close to that.

If it's not off the back of a lorry it seems like a good price, although prices will dip eventually with the new model coming out.

I sold a mint 24-70L about 2+ years ago for £600. That was before a significant universal price rise on technological gear from the far east due to our currency plummeting back then. I'd also bought a new (refurbed) 40D just before that too, and for nearly a year I could've sold it again and still made a profit. :D Now 40Ds are really cheap. :(

:D

I'd check out the warranty conditions. I think that Canon give an international warranty, but check that they don't need proof of tax paid like Sigma do?

With the new one being circa £2k at launch, it'll be quite a while before the price drops enough to affect the original's price or used value to any real degree, much as the 70-200 f/2.8 IS mk2's price hasn't really caused the value of the mk1 to dip much.

Technically should you pay tax etc when coming back to the UK?

There is a certain amount after which you have to pay. It's several hundred pounds, between £300-500 I think. Either way, a 24-70L will be over it.

But I did the same thing. I bought the 24-70L secondhand though in America. Just stuck it on my camera and carried it in my hand luggage. I flat-packed the box and stuck it in my check-in suitcase. Didn't have to pay anything, but I may have been lucky.
