24 - going back to the very start

Finished Day 2 lastnight.

It was better than Day 1 as i remember except for the fact Kim was even more stupid than before!
Jacks advice in the last Ep should have been put the gun in your mouth and pull the trigger. I mean a murder is attacking you and you have a gun but you have to call you dad to ask what to do?

I also just realsised that if your her boyfreind you have a 40% chance your going to lose a limb, but who wouldnt give their right arm to nail Elisha Cuthbert

Charles Logan was the best character in the entire show.

Sherry Palmer for me. Perfectly played, somewhat surprised I haven't seen more of that actress.

As for the OP, I too wasn't quite as impressed by S1 second time around, which is a shame. The early episodes feel a little lacking in drive compared to the later series, and even the assault on Gaines' base wasn't quite as hi-octane as I recalled. The drama is still there but it just feels a little too low-key, too focussed on individuals rather than some kind of national crisis. Gaines goes from being a fearsome villain to something rather trivial, certainly nothing compared to a Chang. I remember noticing that they did a lot more split-screen stuff then too, I guess this was while they were still exploring the main concept of the show (realtime).

Not saying S1 is bad, certainly compared to S8 I think it stands up well. I think one of the problems is that a key underlying theme of S1 was the whole "Who is the Mole?" question, which obviously we know the answer to, and this takes away a lot of the suspense. There's some hints/red herrings in there that were great first time out but meaningless when you know how it is going to turn out.

Oh I am not so sure, having got half way through S1 with the girlfriend I still look forward to the next episode. knowing the story like you mentioned, fair enough but I like to see the reaction on my better half when things unfold. Yes we all know 'who did it' so to speak but she doesnt. I first watched S1 years ago and for the life of me cannot remember anything really. So doing this rewatching again is quite good. The first season has definatly aged, still good but like you said, its not as fast as the later ones and yes I agree with you saying they didnt use split screen much after S1. I guess they presumed we know what its about and how the show is meant to be.

The real problem is watching it on DVD. It detracts from the experience.

24 series 1 was a bit of an 'event'. Every Sunday? night glued to the telly, and the joy of those rare double episodes. :D Nina Myers, Tony and dodgy moustache :D, the perils of Kim, Jack's luckless wife and those final few seconds as the day ended. Great stuff!

On DVD it all blurs in to one seamless Jack Bauer bloodbath and you find your finger hovering over the fast forward button through the slow bits...

I watched the first 3 season's which I thought where great apart from Jack's wife, who annoyed me. I watched the first episode of season 4 and stopped watching it there, it looked even more over the top and the same thing being shown over and over again.

good point.
i watched day 1 on tv, then just got the box sets after that,
buying the boxset does remove some of the anticipation of the next episode.

tbh, enjoyed them all. it does get a bit samey as the series goes on, but its just leave your brain at the door tv

Haha, yeah it was great when it was first on BBC2. I was really bored late one night and couldn't sleep and then switched over to BBC2 and the 3 part catchup was just starting from episode 1. I was completely hooked after that, loved every episode.

Then I went back and watched the whole 2 seasons again a few years later when they were on BBC2 again.

I still think it's great to this day and actually think it went downhill after season 5. Its a shame there is nothing that even comes close to it and probably never will be imo.

Yeah there was a real flurry about it at the time.
I remember whenever I turned on Radio 1, the DJs were talking about it and theorizing. Also remember that back then it wasn't on Sky, it was on BBC2 I think, so it had a much bigger audience (not to say a lot of people don't have Sky though) and TV shows always tend to have their biggest audience during a first series when its fresh.

You have to remember that when you look back at it now and especially as it was an original style of show at the time.

After the first series, I watched every other on DVD boxset. I tried to watch the last series on TV each week, but it just didn't do it for me anymore, it was tired and the same scenarios were used over again, I said to a friend that it looked like maybe it was time they ended the show, then look what happened! I still need to watch the final series where I got up to, but it may be easier viewing watching numerous episodes in a sitting.

24 was and is absolutely awesome.
the suspense and curruption im tellin ya....leaves you wantin more and more
i used to do mega stints i think i did 28 hours at one time fully awake so caught up in the damn thig

Just looking at the 'low key' vs 'national crisis' you bring up there you have to remember this was our introduction to the 24 world and the initial plot seemed more focused as an attack designed to draw out Jack and only Jack.

It's only when he and Palmer get together that things go national crisis level really :)

This its great fun watching my GF get all excited and shouting at the TV like I used to

exactly, I would also never watch it a second time. it's just not the sort of thing you would watch again.

Totally DISAGREE!!!

Ive watched every single episode twice, as well as season 1 + 2 a third time as I got the gf to watch it as well :D

Best show ever made on TV for me, nothing beats it.

Love love love it. Every single ep has kept me on the edge of my seat. Even watching it a 2nd/3rd time you notice things you didnt the first, or totally forget about stuff that happened.

Need to watch the rest of the seasons with the gf, then probably watch it all over again for the 4th time in a few months :D

Just finished watching Season 7. It left me completely underwhelmed. It was just more of the same - 'terrorist' 'bomb' 'kill terrorist' 'another terrorist appears' 'lots of phone calls' 'Jack's family gets involved' 'Mole' etc etc.

It's sad because, when I found Season 1 on BBC2, it was one of the freshest and most outstanding TV programmes I have ever seen.
