£250 to upgrade! what to get?

You can afford an i5 3450 + motherboard + RAM for £200. But if you want graphics aswell you will have to knock the CPU down to something less. They are the basic two options I see

Some of the recommendations people are giving are pretty bad like i5 3570k + B75 mobo and i3 3220 + Z77- these don't work

really? what exactly do you have in mind?

if we could get the i5 + mob + ram for 200 or less it would be perfect, since we actually stretched the budget to 350 - so i can easily squeeze the 7850 in there.

The spec in your basket couple posts up is fine, the motherboard will allow you to upgrade to a K series CPU in future and allow overclocking.

As you mentioned your on limited budget spits finding the best option between components.

I guess something else worth bearing in mind is that with the Z77/H77 if you do upgrade the CPU then you will get a performance increase because of the better inbuilt GPU. Which will be useful for video editing etc! I think Chilled is making that comment because a Z77 motherboard is overkill for just an i3. If your friend wanted to upgrade later then a Z77 is a good choice, but otherwise a H77 might work out cheaper and more cost efficient. The Z77 chipset is more suited to the overclockable K series, but you can always upgrade this later.

good to go?

im sure it will be a huge upgrade, and he will also have extra slots to upgrade the RAM in the future!

I'd go for this, then if wanted to in future grab an I5 although you'll probably find the I3 is more than sufficient. You'll be surprised by how well they perform.

However if you did go for an i5 later on can sell the I3 so wont be like your forking out the full price for i5 at a later date.
