Had a quick search around but my google skills have failed me.
Thinking of doing a 3 x 1080p monitor setup for Eyefinity/Surround gaming but i'm stumped for choice. I currently have a GTX 780 and willing to change to 290's since they are cheap.

My questions are:

Shall I sell my 780 and purchase 2 x 290's?
Does micro stutter exist anymore?
Performance/smoothness wise, which is better?
I have 2 x S23A700D (D-DVI) and S23A750D (DP) - would this work with the 780 @ 120hz?

Cheers.

No Difference unless your Using Mantle.

i think so yes.

The only other thing, the 290 has 4GB of VRAM ve 3GB on the 780, that might come in handy for multiscreen res.

2 things.

Are you struggling with 3GB of VRAM? if not. No.

Do you think Mantle could also help you with CPU performance in Mantle enabled games?

If your current setup is working fine for you? its not worth it.

Performance wise they'll be about on par with each other, some games will swing in one or the others favour.

Generally speaking, most 3 monitor users will tell you amd is probably better equipped with regards to tweaking display settings over 3 monitors.

This is one of the few situations where I would probably advise dropping the single 780 in favour of a pair of 290p's

I am not advising either way but giving my experience with 3 monitor surround on nVidia and it was flawless. Never had any issues worth mentioning and games were very good. I can't comment for AMD, as I have never used 3 monitors with AMD sorry.

Thanks for the feedback. Since we have some Nvidia users here, can any of you confirm that sli works in windowed mode or not? Some people say it does and some says it doesn't.

Hi,

I don't have SLI with surround but my mate does and for him it appears to work in window mode, however.... i do have a slight hijack here for my friend.

With AMD you can task switch between extended & eyefinity & keep crossfire working with no issue, however with SLI my mate can be in surround but if he switches to extended his sli stops working, any ideas to help him out?

nice one

If I had two very similar cards and I was going triple screen again I would go for the nVidia card. I felt their driver solution and interface was superior to AMDs.

That was a year or so back though so things could have changed. AMDs solution works and at times it is better than nVidia's but overall I preferred nVidia's.

That was a year ago, a lot has changed since then :)

In terms are set-up and day to day running nothing has really changed*. AMD still uses profiles to maximise the versatility whilst Nvidia's surround solution is a more turn on and forget solution. The method for controlling the bezel compensation is identical as is positioning. I have found in game there isn't much to choose between them as long as you don't suffer from displayport tearing on the AMD side (fixed for me on the 290(x)).

*Comparing my launch HD7970 with my current 290X and launch GTX680 with GTX780.

My recent benchmarking has showed my current 290X to be noticeably quicker than my old GTX780 @ 1200/6800 in terms of raw framerate (specifically the minimums). That said I certainly wouldn't switch from a decent clocking 780 to a 290/290X especially if you already have the 780 and are looking at going dual cards.

Microstutter still exists, its less of an issue than it was but its still there to vary degrees between levels that are too small to notice to game breaking (not that often these days).

Performance/smoothness and which is better will vary from game to game.

Unless you have a specific need for Mantle or more VRAM stick a 2nd 780 in the reference titan cooler on the 780 is good for keeping the cards from pushing too much heat into the case.

Even if selling the 780 and getting 2 x 290ps works out cheaper?
