2900xt and 2x6 pin

recently got a 2900xt and after finding out it needs 2x6 pin power cables to run at full speed {ccc limits clock and mem if detects 1x 6 pin } i ordered a extra 6 pin cable.

now when i view the clocks in Everest , they are still reporting the clocks at half speed , something which ati tool likes to call 'default speeds' , not happy, as default speeds should be 745 gpu 825 mem, so when i clock the speeds back up with ati tool , everest reports a 45% overclock and everything should be fine, until i quit ati tool and the speeds return to half again.

it looks like ati drivers are forcing the half speeds for some reason. i cant hold any clock change with ati tool. and my pcie bus is at x8.

before i put in the extra power cable, ccc would give me a message saying my card has not enough power and my clock speeds have been cut down , that message has gone. the power cable is connected fine.

also i have reinstalled the drivers. no change.

can anyone shed some light?

thanks

the half speed clocks that you are seeing is 2d clocks, which the card runs at half speed when your not on a game so it doesnt run hot.

fire up a game and then check again and it will be in 3dclocks, unless of course you minimize the game.

as for the connectors, you dont need the +2 pin extra to run it at full, its just for ati CCC overdrive which is no more effective than overclocking with any other tool, iv tryed normal and a connector with the extra pins and it overclocks no further so therefor the extra pins is not needed.

ah, i didn't know this about 2d clocks. this makes sense. reg the cables. i have 2x6 pin powers connected. 1 in a 6 pin connector and 1 in a 8 connector. i hear those 2 extra pins are ground anyway.

cheers for that thanks
