If you had the choice of a 2nd hand 6800GT (AGP) cheaper by £30-40ish than a new 6800GS (AGP) which would you go for? Anyone have a 6800GS that doesn't unlock the extra pipes? Would a overclocked GT be faster than a unlocked and clocked GS? Of course you have a new warranty with the GS vs none with a GT.

I'm not sure if it'll be faster, but the GS will certainly be a lot cooler than the sweat factory that is the 6800GT. The warranty is also a really good point. I'd just get a GS.

I knew it uses slightly less watts but I wasn't aware of the heat issue.

Neither was I and I used to have a 6800GT.

The 6800GS out of the box will be slower. It also is not guaranteed to unlock (unlike the 6800GT which is already running 16 pipes.)

Personally id just go for the GT and clock it further than the GS.

Sure you may get the GS to unluck to GT levels, but then you need to clock it just to get it to the GT speeds.

As its 30-40 cheaper id say go for it, warranty shouldbt be needed anyway :D

Lots of users ran their GT's at Ultra speeds, and it has tighter memory timmings then Ultra, this obv needed bios volt mod and sometimes better cooling as Ultra is dual slot.
£14 NV Silencer 5 rev3 does well even on my Ultra.

Word of warning though, try find out if its got 2.0ns or 1.6ns memory as this will make a major difference to your memory overclock, at a guess I would say it has 1.6ns but both do exist.

Just to add the 6800gt I had, had 2.0ns memory (most did) and it clocked very well indeed right up to 440/1180.

is it not the 1.6ns that's better?

Yes I think it is, but even my 2.0ns (the slower one whichever it is) clocks at 1130, and my core at 410 on 1.3V.
Cores a bit crap on mine considering I got 430 with my 6800nu lol, but I am running agp fast writes - maybe I can reach higher with it off?

Zef, No lower is better 1.6ns is faster than 2.0ns, most good brand of 6800GT's makers used 1.6ns anyhow.

Offical 1.6ns spec is 600mhz so 1200mhz DDR, but it can do 1250mhz DDR , and may need little help with volts mod as 2.1V is default on Ultra

You will be happy regardless, I just thought I'd mention fact some have 2.0ns others have 1.6ns same as Ultra's have.

So really I am right.... not wrong. Anyway on further thinking, another vote for the GT.

Yip, Good makers who aim at a out box overclocked or special card, like golden Samples or Bliss etc etc, possible XFX, but there were not a big player when N40 launced, they are one hell of a good make now.
