2nd hand value 8800GTS, will it drop at the release of Geforce 9800?

Basicly don't want to spend more than 100-120 quid on gfx, should I go for a 2nd hand 1900xt or so or is it worth waiting for 8800, I'd prefer 8800 as I know ati's is struggling 1950pro in TDU with 4X aa, 16x AF, high details, 1280 res and HDR... And I want those settings settings silky smooth tbh...

Can I expect lower prices of 8800GTS 320 mb when geforce 9800 is out?
 
Well any generation release normally drives the previous generation prices down, it's just a case of how much by, and what would be a good purchase at this point in time.

If you're looking for something to "tide you over" and then upgrade again when 9800 launches, then i'd recommend scouring the MM. Anything you buy new now will lose a lot more than something second hand.

£100-£120 is the sweet spot for something like an X1950XT/7900GTX, and they're both more than capable cards. :)

Apparantly it is a whole new chip - G90.

Not sure about it myself, I would have thought, like you, that they'd do a revision first.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't ;) Thats the way you'll look back on it. The fact that there's newer and faster stuff coming out yearly makes buying a card a losers game evey time.

My advice would not be to worry too much about whats going to happen in Nov. Prices may fall prices may not, it depends on too many things. Buy a card now based on your current requirements.

Theres a difference between Nvidia Geforce 9800 and ATI Radeon 9800...

The thing is a 1900xt is just too small of a difference to my 6800GS, just 2-2.5 times the frames, i want at least 4x more frames, I am not willing to pay so much for a card that can't play current games maxed, ( i doubt a 1950xt does, my mates 1950pro struggles in tdu with all the fancy stuff on + HDR) , the whole reason I want to upgrade is TDU, so i can supersample and have HDR @ the same time and 8x + FSAA and 16x AF.
The only situation where I'd buy a card now, is when I'm sure the prices won't drop in nov...

I can wait, I refuse to pay so much too much anymore, for example I bought geil 2gb ram recently, 2 weeks too early, I could have saved 40 €, thats 60 dam beers... I just refuse to waste my money on pc parts that are bought too early because they are the top ones, like the 8800's & 2900's are atm...
I can manage with playing my games on current settings for a few months longer.


Regardless, was there some statement that nvidia wont drop it's prices? If not I'm probably waiting till Nov, unless I get something for free or sub 30 € or whatever...

ATi had a Radeon 8500, nvidia now have a Geforce 8500...it happens, its no biggie :)
 
My 9800Pro would cry if nVidia stole it's name.. it just seems dirty.. The 9800Pro was such a revolutionarily good card.. I hope nVidia skip the number just in honour of the brilliant ATi card.

If they don't I'm totally gonna try pwning my 9800Pro off to some n00b as a next gen kickass graphics card. Even better then the regular nVidia 9800s because it has 'Pro' at the end. :D

Good times, I never actually owned a 9700 Pro myself, went straight from a Geforce 2 MX 440 (Yes i know.......) to a brand new shiny Powercolour 9800 XT courtesy of OCUK :)
