OK, I won an auction on a Sony TV (CRT).

Seller (zero feedback, new to Ebay) messages me after the end of the auction to tell me he's had to withdraw it from sale, no reason given. My initial thought was that it didn't fetch as much as they wanted...

I message them back saying "that's disappointing, but before I give -ve feedback, could I ask the reason?".

Surprise, surprise "My wife's been taken into hospital with serious condition, hope that answers your question".

I reply "If that's true, I hope she gets well soon, but you ought to know this is a common reason given on [this auction site]".

I then leave neutral feedback "Seller pulled item after auction end. Impossible to tell if genuine reason".

I'm peeved about not being able to get the TV, but did I do the right thing in this case?

Reckon they are genuine? (Impossible to say I guess).

meh, if he wanted more he should have left higher reserve,
if wife realy WAS in hospital then maybe just ask to defer things.
I call shenanigans!

I would have thought that he would have been more apologetic or contacted you with more details.

Sounds like he didn't get what he wanted for it.

Yes an insensitive perception but what does his wife in hospital have to do with selling the TV on ebay?

Good point.

I could have asked "do you mind waiting, or I will withdraw it as of this problem at home etc etc"

Probably took him as long to email you and reply to questions as it would posting the thing. He's more likely to be taking time off work too. Visiting hours aren't 24/7. Rubbish tbh.

Ebay is such a minefield ffs. Although I probably wouldn't trust a seller with zero feedback.
He isn't genuine if you ask me. I won a top once, really cheap, that the seller then claimed had been damaged in a flood.
The point of ebay is to get a bargain, people shouldn't expect to get market value for their goods.

Um I thought that if the auction ended and you won it - the deal has been done!

"end of the auction to tell me he's had to withdraw it from sale" He *has* done the deal with you.

He could have withdrawn it *before* it ended and all would have been cool.

I would check with eBay to see what you can do. He has now entered into a mutual contract with you to sell it to you. He knew about this when he contracted eBay to act as the selling vehicle for this TV.

Sounds to me like a classic, 'Aww crap I wanted more for that' excuse.

It could be more hassle than it is worth to pursue it. Chances are it will end up back on eBay with a reserve or higher start price.

I would pursue it.

Has happened to me before on the bay. I had to wait approx 2 weeks to get the item. Excuses were "i'm working away for the next 4 days will post after the weekend" , fair enough. Then "I was involved in a major car accident etc" another 3 days. A refund was offered but i pressed for the item.

I knew the reason for the stalling ( ram listed as OZC and not OCZ so it attracted little interest ) and i got a bargain. :D

Ebay is a mutually binding contract.

Don't let people like this get away with it.
