Hi guys..

I have just got a nice new Dell U2711 and its great... Now I would like a 2nd smaller monitor to run along side it. the 2nd screen would be for emails and internet use.

I would like the screen to be rotated in portrait mode and a good match for height and res to the U2711.

The best match I can see is the Dell E1709W or Dell IN1720 res 1440X900.

Are there any better choices? PVA or IPS 17" 1440X900 panels? Do any have rotating stands?

Also does anyone know of a good twin monitor desktop stand at a cheap price?

Thanks all

Don't know what errata is on about, I've been running two monitors with different resolutions without any problems (under both Linux and Windows). Never had any problems what-so-ever. Now running a triple setup with different resolutions (2560x1440, 1680x1050 & 1200x1920) and still entirely problem free.

There aren't any PVA or IPS screens with a 1440x900 resolution with that it seems (looked it up on a site I can't like here due to the forum policy). After market desktop stands are extremely rare, those that can hold a 27" monitor are even rarer. What does work quite nice for me however is to use a monitor arm to get all the adjustment options you can need.

I'm somewhat in the same boat in that I can't seem to find any monitor that would fit nicely next to the 27" behemoth (although mine is a Hazro even further complicating things cause I would like the secondary monitor to be glossy as well ;)).
A 21.5"/22" Full HD comes relatively close to the 27" monitors pixel density wise and probably is the best option if you want good viewing angles (the Dell u2212hm for example uses an IPS-screen). If you're feeling adventurous you could try looking for laptop IPS-screens, perhaps those can be obtained with the proper resolution/screen size. Again.. can't link to them or the needed extra electronics to drive them due to the forum policy :(

Am running two screens - U2711 Landscape and 2209WA Portrait at max resolution on a 560ti and no problems! What revision on the U2711 did u get?

Thanks for the input..

I have a NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT currently and it is happily running the dell u2711 and my old xerox pva 19" at different resolutions.

My new U2711 is A09 I know these are currently A10 so it must be older stock, November 2011. I got it for £515 delivered I was looking at 2nd hand one's and refebs on ebay but went new for the warranty and 7 day return encase the AG was an issue

I would have thought 21"-22" would be too high when in Portrait as the 17" looks quite a good match and the 19 where too large.

u2711 Preset display area:

Horizontal 596.74 mm (23.49 inches)
Vertical335.66 mm (13.22 inches)

E1709W Preset display area:
Horizontal 367.2mm (14.5 inches)
Vertical 229.5mm (9.04 inches)

So the 17" is 31mm larger so no a bad match

Could you post a pic of your screens?

Most screens 17" seem to be TN and vga only, not found one which rotates either... why is nothing ever simple....

Hi, here's a picture of my 2nd monitor, I know it's big but I had this monitor for 3 years now and still a good monitor!!

That is the sort of thing I was thinking... I have been using a 4:3 19" xerox pva 1280X1024 as 2nd screen as it was my old one to see how I would get on. The size is not a great match and res is also not a match, moving the mouse across the two screens is not great as it ends up in diffrent place.

How do you find using your two screens?

I'm thinking maybe the 17" dell E1709W might be the best option for me. I have been looking at other make to see if I can find DVI or PVA screen options, not found any yet....

Am finding it good, loving my U2711. For the 2nd monitor I just keep emails, forums, news and youtube, it's quite useful when your working on the main monitor.

i picked up a 2nd hand dell 1703fpt which is doing me very well as a second monitor stand is height adjustable plus can do portraite and landscape, dvi plus vga and 4 port usb hub. has served me very well as a 2nd screen

Whats the screen size I think in portraite is very close size match? I think the res is 1280 x 1024 not 1440 X 900 does this casue you any issues moving between the screens?

It has nice stand and DVi input, it was just the res that put me off this screen

Ben looking into the same thing, a small screen to sit next to my U2711 to run excel / browser whilst using the main screen as the desktop. That Dell 1703 looks like a decent enough option.

I preesume its easy with a dual card setup? Just DPort to the U2711 and DVI to the 2nd monitor (both from the 6990)

Would it be possible to have 2x 1703's in portrait and a u2712 in landscape mode?

You would need a GTX 680 or the ATI cards for 3 monitor setup to work, I have 2 monitors and a 3D TV which I have to switch one off to get the other one on through the nvidia settings.
