2X xfx 7800gtx 512mb xxx in sli or 7950 GX2 on its own??

Go for the 7950 GX2, they will probably be about the same performance wise, with the GX2 maybe just sneaking it, however, there are many advantages for the GX2.

1) ideal single card setup to port across to your new Conroe setup if you get one, SLI is not confirmed on Conroe till nVidia sort the mobo's out.

2) I bet the GX2 is cheaper, it certainly uses less power etc.

3) When the drivers are out you have the option of another GX2, (nice option to have).

Depends how much the second GTX will set you back. Imo, 2 7800GTX512 XXX's will be quicker than a single GX2.

If you can get another one for under £200, then go for it :)

I'd go for the GX2. The 7800s in SLI will be faster, but with the GX2 you have a single card, you have less heat, you still have one of the fastest graphics solutions on the market.

As the title says which will be better!!?

Well, I had the same decision to make, and went for the GX2.

Not sure if it's 'better' than 2 7800 512s - but certainly a lot better than one!

I'd have thought the 7800gtx512 XXXs would be hands down the fastest. They are certainly a lot quicker than a pair of 7900gts and I'd fancy a pair of 7900gts to beat a single 7950gx2 without too much tweaking.

Having said that, on cost vs performance I think the 7950GX2 is the better bet. Getting hold of an XXX version of the 7800gtx512 will cost and arm and a leg and if you've got one already you should be able to sell if for at least most of the cost a 7950gx2.

i got my xxx 512 for £205 and i'm about to get another for £190

so £390 for 2 xxx 512s or circa £500 for a gx thingy

also if i oc them a bit they will be even faster i guess??

For £190 go for the 7800gtx 512 ;) . The 7900gtx/gt seems to fail all the time. The 7800gtx is really sturdy, and never heard any similar problems with them :)
680/1900 should be easy with my 7800gtx 512 after a vmod I'm doing in a few weeks! Sure, it'll be hot, but I don't really care, I'm watercooling anyhow :D . I wouldn't perform a vmod on the current 7900 cards...

No competition then. The 7800512s will murder a 7950gx2 and not cost you a penny more. Heat and power will be more of an issue (particularly power with all those hard disks), but I'm assuming you've got that base covered or you wouldn't be thinking about it.

Yup, £190 is very cheap. I paid something like £215 for mine incl. shipping, and I don't have the xxx version, only the standard xfx version :(

Do you think 580W tagan isn't enough for all thats listed??

Hmm....I think it might be tight. I would certainly give it a go before replacing. I don't think that there's any real chance you'll get anything worse than unexpeted crashes, but even with a high quality Tagan like that you are still trying to run 2 of nvidia's most power hungry cards, half a dozen hard disks and a good sound card. I think you'll get away with it, but if you don't you shouldn't be bowled over with surprise.

I think it will be fine :) . I have a Mist 500w which got 2 12V rails 20A on each, and I've heard of people using x1900xtx crossfire. 7800gtx 512mb sli should be fine I think ;)

at £190  do it! DO IT! BUY THE CARD.........DO IT! (sorry was watching starsky and hutch the other night :P)
The GTX 512 x 2 will outperform the single card, if you do care about power, sound, heat etc then the GX2 would be the way to go.

But at £190 i certainly would find it hard to resist.
