3-pin fan but 4-pin Mobo

I got given a Titan Vanessa off InSanCen the other day.

I fancy throwing it onto one of my Intels, but the Fan has a 3-pin connection, and the Intels have 4-pin jobs.

Can I get some little adaptery thingy, or can I just mush this on and ignore a pin?

I think I kind of knew deep down, because of the shape of the connections, but at the same time, I didnt.

Out of curiosity, what does that 4th wire do?

4-pin is PWM. Rather than reducing the voltage to control the fan, it sends little pulses of 12v current to make the fan run slower but without all the problems of reducing voltage.

So, its not truthfully necessary then.

I notice its on my Conroe setups but none of my AMD ones... Although my best AMDs are 939... I dont have any recent ones.
