Hi,
I noticed today 3 small piercings on the cpu as if something was trapped in between the cpu and hsf when i attached the hsf. Thesse are small but is it worth voiding the warranty and lapping or will it not really affect temps they are about the diameter of a needle point and not too deep. Quite far a part too.

What should i do.

they are small pits but there is a matching bump on the heatsink which could mean if it doesnt sit in the pit on the cpu then it could be a bad contact.

On the cpu there are 2 pits all near the outside but on the heatsink there is only 1.

I am reluctant to lap the cpu because i want my warranty but is it worth just lapping the heatsink. If so should i go for a 400 600 800 and 1000 or what?

i highly doubt that these pits will have an appreciable effect on the thermal conductivity between the CPU and HSF.

that said, you WILL see a benefit from lapping, so it really depends on whether your current temps are good or not :)

before this happened temps were about 60 load at 3.54ghz on prime95.

I want to get to 4ghz so lapping may be necessary.

Theroretically the bump on the hsf should fit into the groove on the cpu but if it doent exaclty the hsf will be raised up and the contact will be virtually non exestant.
Ill take a picture and upload it.

its an i7 920. Have only played demo as yet so dont know about online... should be good. Ill just lap the cpu and hsf. Will i be able to sell it more or less easily lapped.
