3 UK drops data limits, proper "unlimited" now

This is pretty tempting, not that I'd stream HD videos on my phone all day long (the battery wouldn't last half a day!) but I do have friends in other countries whom I use Skype to talk with quite a lot. Plus the tethering would be handy, I like being able to whip out my netbook and do a bit of work anywhere, although I live in the centre of Leeds so it's not that hard for me to find free wifi.

What I'm really worried about is that there'll no doubt be small print saying they reserve the right to change the terms and conditions (eg by imposing a fair usage policy) partway through your contract. So if you're signing up for 2 year with them beware of that possibility.

I've been with 3 for three years now, they've been top notch for me. Admittedly I've never had to use customer services (because there has never been a problem) but I get full signal nearly everywhere I go and decent download speeds. Certainly better than my Vodafone connection on a work phone.

Hopefully this won't impact the network adversely, although I understand 3 have a lot of unused capacity at the moment. Also, they've already said they reserve the right to throttle if needed.

mast in my area has been playing up recently only at my home so I can just use wifi anyways but i got a discount for lack of service. (t-mobile) i seem to get 1Mbps to 2Mbps everywhere else.:p

Now I know to avoid 3. All the greedy beggars will be using the network, crippling it :p

Don't they share 3G coverage with T-Mobile as well. The other network with generous data allowances.

Why am I not surprised by these figures:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11998793

Initial data, based on 1,000 speed tests, shows that Vodafone offers the fastest connections, with an average of 3.04Mbps (megabits per second), compared to 2.61Mbps for 02 and 2.61Mb for Orange.

Three averaged 1.48Mbps and T-Mobile came bottom of the league table with an average of 1.40Mbps.

To be honest, 500MB is enough for me and having low speeds when outside is what annoys me more than anything (trying to get important information as quickly as possible). So I'll stick with orange for now.

While unlimited data is nice, I'd prefer a rolling contract, so if they do decide to bait and switch I wouldn't be locked into a 12 month contract...

They can't really do that on contracts. Check the contract and usually there's a clause which says that they can't increase prices beyond inflation or something.

Only reason they have this clause in reality is in case inflation suddenly shoots up and their revenue suddenly becomes worth much less.

3 are great, only problem is the customer service.

Oh and my contract is better :p

£20/m for 750 mins 50mms 3000txt 2GB internet. 12 month contract, and also with a phone (Got the Desire HD for £110).

It's not really a change in price I would be too worried about. What if you took out a contract only a few months later to change unlimited to xxxMb per month?

Yeh but presumably they'd have charges for going over the limit hence making monthly charge higher to you for the same product.

Its still not 'truly' unlimited.
Once you pass a certain amount of usage they throttle p2p, video etc.
Keep going and they block p2p, video ..

Or that is what staff are telling people @ Bitterwallet.com

you know, i think the 3 - T-Mobile mast sharing agreement has ended.
i used to get good 3G signal on T-mobile all over the place, London and Coventry, but since T-Mobile and orange started their merger, my signal's gone way down.

i suspect that T-Mobile canceled their sharing thing with three in anticipation of getting access to Oranges 3G network.

Is it me or have they backtracked from this now?
I've been browsing their online shop and all I see is 1GB allowances, even on the "One Plan", no mention of "unlimited" data plans anywhere.

Nope, still going ahead last I heard. This is from my uncle who works on the development side at Three.

Popped into a store and asked, apparently they only do this in-store, not through their online shop. Pretty canny, as the people likely to get it in-store are the ones least likely to use lots of bandwidth really! :p
