I am putting together a gaming PC that will hopefully be able to cope with 4K. I am toying with various options and I would like opinions on which would be best, 3 290xs or 2 Titan blacks. They will be water cooled.

Thanks in advance for your views.

3x290 (non x) or 3x780 6gb would be my advise.

The titan black is as good as irrelevant now 6gb 780/ti's are available and the perf difference between 290p and 290x is slim at best.

If i was going 4k id probably want as much vram as i could get, assuming there was no budget restrictions. 4gb-6gb might be fine now, but with vram usage starting to rocket up (watchdogs and wolfenstein) id want to be looking at future proofing at such a high resolution.

Only with waterblocks, dumping all that heat into your case on air would be very unfortunate and the card spacing would be a nightmare.

They will be water cooled.

Sorry 6GB slower cards over 8GB faster ones
If the 6GB ti's were out it would be different but there not yet :P

That's why I haven't bought the 6gb 780. If 6gb ti's are coming that'll be my first choice (depending on the price). Other than that I'm still undecided between a pair of 290x's and a pair of 6gb 780's. I know there's the 8gb 290x but two of those puts the price over what I can justify paying. I'm struggling to justify paying over 400 per card as it is.

Plus a pair of 290x's that are each around the 400 mark looks like a very good deal.

as pgi says, 3x 780 6GB would get my money - the fps difference between the 290/290X/780/780ti are basically single digit, but I would want maximum VRAM for 4K
the shame of it is that games are getting less and less optimised, don't have 4K textures yet ratchet up the VRAM usage for no good reason, so whilst 3 or even 4 might seem to be good for a range of titles, it could have a negative impact with the dross that developers are churning out

Thanks for the replies. I had considered the 8gb 290x card but I was also concerned about the problems watercooling it. I am not one of these obsessives about maxing out every setting for the sake of it and I expect software demands to increase in the future, but I would at least like to start out with a set up that is not already struggling.

Are there any other issues with a triple card set up other than increased heat and power consumption?
