£300 camera

get a Nikon D40, or for a little extra the Canon 400D, should be in your price range, should you enjoy photography then you can expand on a system and not be restricted to a P+S, these dSLR's can operate fully automatic mode but you can be imaginative with the manual modes too. If you don't like photography as much as you think, you'll get more of a resale value than that of a P+S (point and shoot)

think ill pick up a D40 or 400D

im basically finding myself getting into photography and photoshop a lot more and the problem i face at the minute is having a d900 that cant take stunning shots and a 6megapixel camera that basically comes out exactly same as the d900 shots

so im looking to get myself a good camera and looking at the D40 and 400D they seem to tick everything i need i.e. upgradeability

on those to cameras tho, ill be using them at fishing mainly taking photos of fish i catch and the sunsets and what not, how fairly will they stand upto abit of very light abuse and abit of water ? isit possible to buy something waterproof for them

you can get a waterproof cover for the 400D, not sure on the D40, but they are expensive. You can make a makeshift cover for them which will stand up to very light splashes but don't take my word for it :D, this basically involves covering the whole camera in a waterproof cover leaving the lens exposed and obviously the viewfinder so you can see what you are shooting. as for abuse as in dropping etc, i wouldn't recommend it.

it wont be dropped at all, more like put in the bottom of my seatbox or carryall, this will be very very light knocks, is there anything i can get for it to protect it ?

itll only be light splashs, but i would like abit of protection if i did end up dropping the camera in

the 400D sounds like the choice for me with the various accessories avaliable, i.e. waterproof cases and so on

sounds alright yeah, but that looks like an ebay auction, in which case it'll be coming from china, therefore to body will need to be sent back to china if anything goes wrong with it as they don't have worldwide warranty unlike canon's lenses. I'd say it's worth paying a little extra for peace of mind.

If you search some auctions you can get a 350D with kit lens for £300 from a trusted UK trader - only comes with a 30 day warranty though.

They are also doing an as new 400D with 18-55mm kit lense and 70-300mm sigma (great lense) for £450 with a years warranty.

I know it's over the budget but would be a great starter package.

Just add a 2gb CF for £20 and you're sorted.
