well i remember there was some hard drive in overclockers with 15 000 rpm i think there was one even 300 gb that was about like 6 months ago maybe even 8 ~9 months back why they r gone and were are they ?

They where 300gb SCSI drives and as posted above where very expensive. no loss mate :) seriously. probably made a loud whine kinda noise anyway (as most drives of that speed do) dont be too gutted. Good sata drives are nearly as good anyway :)

oh and they where Fujitsu drives IIRC :)

I got loads of unused SCSI drives at work that I can use, however SCSI cards are expensive

All the cool kids are using SAS SFF drives now. 15k 72gb x 10 4tw ;) Saying that we just bought a storage cluster that takes up a couple of cabs consisting of 96 15K SCSI drives.

JBod as in 'Just a Bunch of Disks'? :)

SAS drives cost about the same as their FCAL and SCSI counterparts. The controllers however.... would make your eyes pop!

I recently got a high performance SAS controller and 2 cheetah 15krpm drives. That bit was easy enough (if u got the £). Getting a cable that join the 2 together is a completely different issue. If you're not using a backplane, have fun finding the right cable.... I know I am :(

I'm running 4x Fujitsu MAX 74GB in RAID-0 (from overclockers) and the noise is, well, the lack of noise is just fine :) - amazingly, quieter idle than the pair of WD360GD's in my last rig, but i think the rubber dampeners I'm using has a lot to do with that (Lian Li A16 case, with their natty HD enclosures).

We have a few Maxtor Atlas 15k's and Seagate Cheetah 15k.4's at work and they indeed have a high pitched whine - as I found during testing out of the server room, but Fujitsu MAS/MAX (same mechanics apart from the ROHS compliance) and Cheetah 15k.5's aren't bad at all.

Stick with the raptor and don't bother with RAID 0.
