Just received my 3060Ti and it has a 12-pin plug in the GPU meaning I have to use the 8pin to 12pin " dongle " that it came with. This won't affect the performance will it ?

Cool thanks !
Seems excellent so far, much higher FPS on cyperpunk and it runs cooler and lots lots quieter than the RX580

Mine came today too. The 12 pin adapter only has 6 holes with contacts in and the other 6 holes are empty?

No, that's right. My 3070 FE is the same. Connector on the card is fully wired.

Yeah, doesn't make much sense. Could have easily fitted a standard 8-pin in the same place. At least fully wire the 12-pin adapter.

is it not for scaling up and down, for example some cards will require the full 12 whilst the lower end will only require 6 pins due to power requirements.
not that i agree but using 1 12 pin across a whole range is cheaper than using 1 8 and 1 6 here and 1 8 here and 1 6 here.. for example

Yeah i got confused when I saw it was 12 pin. I expected either 8, 14 or 16.

Odd how the " power dongle " has 6 pins. Maybe the GPU only needs 6 ?

3060/3070 dongle requires 1x 8-pin, where the 3080 version requires 2x 8-pin. Considering the 3060/3070 12-pin is fully connected on the card there must be some benefit for those running 12-pin dedicated cables from the PSU.

Trying to remember the traditional pinout. Think the 8-pin has 3x 12V and the other 5 are ground, so a couple could be surplus to requirements. Not seen a pinout for the 12-pin, I'll assume that the 3060 "half" version is 3x 12V and 3x ground.

All a bit odd really.

What would happen if you were to attach 12 pin straight from the PSU, or would it be physically impossible to do that ?

maybe some PSU's have a 12 pin ?

Confusing how the GPU has 12 pins, but the adapter has 8 ??

It'll just work. 2x 8-pin PCI-E = Nvidia proprietary 12-pin = 2x150W = 300W.

It's Nvidia ignoring a perfectly good standard for their Founders cards for reasons I can't quite fathom. All the cards from Board Partners are still using standard 8-pin connectors. Some PSU makers are supplying cables for their recent modular PSUs so you don't need the 8-pin to 12-pin adapter dongle thing.

We're likely to see multiple pointless redundant cables coming with Modular PSUs in the future depending on GPU brand. It's just dumb. The standard is for 8-pin.

or you buy/obtain a ready made customised one to suit your case/colour and dont need the dongle ;)

Would that give any performance increase or is it purely aesthetics ?

Corsair are selling them too, on their site.

What throws me is there are 12 metal pins on the GPU, but only 6 pins on the adapter

I'm sure we will find out in time. Nvidia would have put metal contacts in all of the adapter which plugs into the GPU if it were beneficial.
Can't really justify spending £20 on a Corsair 12-pin cable just for aesthetics really.

It’s obviously done to save space on the PCB. Not only the connector is much smaller than 2 8pin connectors but it’s also mounted vertically.
