3070 worth the extra £100-£150 vs 6700XT

After six years I'm looking to upgrade my 6600k/GTX970 rig and have most of my components selected but for the graphics card. After the initial shock to the system that the card will cost more that my entire PC cost me back in 2015, I've narrowed my choice to the 3070 or 6700XT.

From what I gather, the 3070 outperforms the 6700XT, but I can get the latter for £150 less.

Taking into account the saving, is it worth to delay the build by a couple of months to save up for the 3070, or pull the trigger on the 6700XT and game on for another 3-4 years?

I don't think its worth the extra £150 tbh, they perform more or less on par game dependant. Also depends if you value Ray tracing or if any of the games you play has ray tracing. Given what i know now, i probs would have gone for a 6900xt instead of the 3090 as i rarely use ray tracing (except cyberpunk).

Aren't FE cards as rare as hens teeth? I'm leaning more to the 6700XT, but don't want to be left with buyers remorse. TBF, I've not played any games with RT, I've not played any of the newer titles on account my current system doesn't allow me unless I have all settings down to medium at the max.

You get a good 15% performance uplift with the 3070 (reference) over a top end 6700XT and 20% over the reference 6700XT. So if the price is 15-20% difference then it's a choice of paying for the extra perf. But anything less than 15% it looks more attractive. Of the lowest priced cards available at OCUK it's a 17% difference in price. So you are paying for any performance uplift.

The 3070 only has 8GB of RAM where the 6700XT has 12GB. But the 3070 has Ray tracing.

So I'd either try and get a 3070 FE for £469 and not the £930 I see. Hard but not impossible and saves you a fortune. Or go for the 6700XT. I'd try really hard for 3070FE. Spat my tea out when I saw the price is nearly a grand for AIB 3070's and that's the cheapest one! I got scalped early on by 15% for my 3080 and that stung a bit, but 100% these days! NAh,

research how people are using stock alerters via telegram (how I got mine), get signed up and be ready when you get one to get through the shopping process as fast as poss. You are up against loads of people and scalpers . Maybe you can set up an account so you are already logged in to pay. Helps if you dont have a job where you can either get to your phone or a PC.

Other than that it would be 6700XT

Good luck

Thanks for the heads up. Don't know how these alerters work, do you have a link that will help me out?

get the telegram app and search for 3070 stock alerter. part alerter. You can sign up for many different cards and alerts. It was a year ago when I did it and cant remember. Somewhere in these threads. Some wher ein these gfx cards threads theres more detail. So look back at posts from last october/november in threads such as this https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/30xx-series-founders-edition.18900183/

Hopefully someone doing the same can chime in with better info.

If your willing to spend £900 on a 6700XT I'd go for a 3080 FE at £650
I was looking at the 6700XT for £750. It makes me cry to think how much I'm overpaying, but unless I hold out for an FE card, I won't be playing some of the games on my Steam list.

I value VRAM, so I'd go for 12GB unless you can score an FE.

As for the performance differences:
TPU has the 3070 +5% at 1080P (142% / 135%) and +8% at 1440P (162% / 150%).
https://www.techpowerup.com/review/gigabyte-radeon-rx-6600-eagle/31.html
CB has the 3070 7% faster at 1080P and 10% at 1440P:
https://www.computerbase.de/thema/g...#diagramm-performancerating-avg-fps-2560-1440
So the +15% to +20% that Woodsta888 mentioned seem a bit high.

Thanks for the info. Just thinking off the top of my head, and I'm leaning more to the 6700XT and using the money saved on also upgrading my monitor to something with 144Hrz or more

If you decide not to wait on an FE edition card, then I'd say just get the 6700XT that's available to you now. Which ever card you get, you are going to see a massive boost in performance - if you have the 6700XT that chances are you'll be enjoying your gaming and thinking how great it is compared to what you had... you won't be thinking "I could have improved my FPS by another 4 frames if I'd just waiting longer for a different card".

If you overclock the 6700 XT you'll be at/past 3070 stock performance at 1080P/1440P.

Some 6700 XT gameplay I recorded in a few games if you are interested.

Warzone 1080P Max Settings

Warzone 1080P Low Settings

F1 2021 4K Max Settings

Far Cry 6 1440P Max Settings Benchmark

Far Cry 6 Gameplay 1440 Max Settings

Resident Evil Village 1440P Max Settings

Forza Horizon 4 1440P Max Settings

Shadow Of the Tomb Raider 1080P Max Settings

Dirt 5 1440P Max Settings

Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War 1440P Max Settings

If you look for 3070 comparison videos on YouTube in the games I mentioned above, you'll find the 6700 XT is more than competitive with a 3070 and has more memory to boot.

bt

I just used GURU 3D reviews and my numbers compiled from GAME benchmarks within it.

Your first link shows results from a 6600 review. Why wouldn't you use a review from the cards we are talking about? Looks like TPU haven't even reviewed a 6700XT and extrapolated.

Ah it needed the space between the number and XT - otherwise I got zero hits - again then why not use a 6700XT review?

Anyway, wouldn't be usual if an AMD employee didn't come in and put a load of AMD sponsored game benches up. Independent much? :D

Just doin' yer job mate - I know

Hey, three of those (F1 2021, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Call of Duty Black Ops) are Nvidia sponsored titles.

No good getting salty with me just because your 10-15% got called out as wrong. :p
