Following on from yesterdays thread, i'm even more confused than ever....

Just been to my local independant camera shop, they will be stocking the 40D body only for £769 or 17-85IS kit for £999

an other photo shop also has an offer on a 30D +17-85IS for £869

My 3rd option is to buy a used 30D for ~ £300/£350 (what my independant shop will be selling for) and a tamron 90mm F/2.8 macro lens or sigma 70mm F/2.8 macro lens, just had a play with both and preferred the tamron for £269, which will bring my total to ~ £600.

I'll be using my camera for mainly macro stuff and some landscapes, but the 17-40 F/4 can wait a while.

So do i get the 40D body only or spend less and get a decent macro lens too?

hard choice. For macro I do firmly believe that the liveview feature will be a great asset to macro photography. However its a longish wait for a new camera and then your low on funds for the macro lens its self whereas you could be doing both instantly with a 30D.

Do you REALLY want the 40D is the question.

Tbh, i thought that live view would be good, but i'm too used to using the eyepiece now, i use the eyepiece on our lasses compact out of habit.

The only reason i fancy the 40D is because it's quite a bit of an upgrade to the 20d/30d, midtones are supposed to be much better too, and it has the digic 3 processor, but at the same time, a 30d is going to be more of an upgrade to my 10d and will be half the price of the 40d. The 40d is coming out in the next 3 weeks, and i wasn't buying for at least another 2-3 weeks anyway. I'll wait and see what the ebay seller sells his for before i decide as £700 was really my upper budget.

Also, i've been humming and ha'ing over a decent macro lens for ages now and i've got the oppertunity to do it now. But again on the flipside, i've been used to using the reversed 35-80 lens technique with great results and after playing with the proper macro lenses today, it seems as though i used the same technique as with the reversed lens, but i get much more than 1:1 on the reversed lens.

And the macro lens would act as a good solid prime lens for general shots, would allow you to focus to infinity and would be much sharper. Also as the 40D is released, it might be a bit tricky to get hold of initially, and the second hand prices of the 30D should come down even further. :)

Bodies come and go, but good glass lasts much longer. I would get a second hand 30D and invest in decent glass. :)
I completely agree with this.
Why don't you invest your money on some good lenses and wait maybe 12 months for the 40D to have the kinks worked out and to drop in price a bit?

I'd get the used 30D and lenses. With those you can get on with doing the photography you like.

That's a very keen price on the 40D by the way.

Would the used 30d have a warranty? how many clicks would it have had?

Reason being a , a new shutter and labour would be £200+

I have the 30D and love it. Have since i first picked it up. Highly recommended ;)
The shutter on it is rated for 100,000 actuations for the record.

i know the 30D is rated for 100k actuations, but is there any way to find out how many it has had?

I'm pretty much decided i think on the 30D + macro lens.

The image file name, at default it counts from 0000 up, so first one is IMG_0001 and so on, I am up to 3500.

Which means it does reset every 10,000 shots taken so you have to semi-guess when its above that judging on the condition of the camera.
