3570K Silent Cooler with PWM

Nope, not too late. In the end I couldn't decide. The main concern was the silver arrow taking up too much space.
As I'm now unlikely to get a fan delivered by this weekend, I'm going to use the stock cooler temporarily (unless I can decide on something and sort delivery out asap).

I think my ideal cooler would have been NH-D14 2011 + adapter kit, but that would be at a silly price.

The silver arrow is an alternative, but it's massive. I do now have the motherboard so I can roughly work out the space needed.
The extreme version seemed tempting but the lack of reviews and potentially greater noise put me off.

The macho appeals for it's size and noise but I'm not too sure about it's overclocked performance.

Seriously considering Phanteks, but noise is a large issue.

I realize that I may end up being the guinea pig, but I would like to try and make an informed decision.

Btw I will not be adding any additional fans in the case and will be using it in it's stock state.

Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme cools the same at 1300rpm as Silver Arrow SB-E does at maximum rpm. Both are same volume at above rpm.

K2 is almost identical to D14 2011 and cheaper... and comes with mounts for all CPUs. Uncle Petey has K2 on his system. Talk to him about what it's like. Also Helios is using one.

The better the cooler the quieter it will be simply because the fans don't need to run as fast to keep CPU cool.

Right now for example. My 920 @ 3.5GHz is surfing away at 10% CPU; 40c; 660rpm. If I unplug CPU fans temp goes up to 42c. Put CPU to work at 40-50% and temp goes up to 48c; still 670rpm. Start encoding some video with CPU @ 70% and temp goes to 52c and rpm goes to 900rpm. Cooler and case are still quiet but can hear air going through PSU now because PSU is working harder and it's fan is running faster.

Now if I push OC to 4.0GHz @ 100% CPU fans spin at 1800rpm and temps go up into the 70s... and you can definitely hear the fans! ;) TY-143 fans still have 700rpm to go. :D

My R2 has 2x 120mm in front and 1x 140 in bottom intake and 1x 120mm rear exhaust. Top vent is open. When CPU and GPU are both working case exhaust is 3-5c above ambient. Most of that temperature rise is Gigabyte Hd 5770 Silent Cell passive cooling GPU radiating all it's heat inside of case.

Yup, I just leave the two 120mm (the same goes for 120/140 stock) fans at 800-1000rpm for whatever I'm doing.
BF3 for example on mostly ultra @1080p / 2500k @4.5ghz doesn't go above 51C and there's no noticeable noise.

Prime95 Blend @4.5 and 1K rpm (inc case fans) kept it at mid-late 60's, occasionally spiking at 71-72C. Room temp: 23-25C
I could probably quite easily get away with 8 or 900rpm or less.

At idle/surfing, I can switch the cooler fans off altogether if I want and not go much past 40C on a warm day. I don't bother though because I can't hear the fans anyway.
EDIT: It's 26.5C ambient, K2 fans have been off for 30mins and idle temps (general internet/youtube usage) haven't gone beyond 36C with case fans @700rpm...

You don't need to run super speed fans, and barely anything you're actually going to use your PC for is going to heat your CPU to the extent that benchmarking/stress testing will. Even then, you're covered.
Your intake fans will probably make more noise pulling air through mesh/grills. Mine do (or did before I cut the grills out) :D

It should quite easily fit as the 140mm fan doesn't extend past the side edge of the heatsink.

Thanks, I'll consider the K2 as well though it is somewhat pricey.
I'm put off by the silver arrow sb-e due to it's width, having seen a picture elsewhere of it almost touching the Graphics Card, i'm not too keen on it anymore.

I'm very tempted by the Noctua NH-D14 2011, but OCUK appears to be out of stock on the NM-I3 mounting kit.

K2 is cheaper than D14 ;)

Cooler size comparison
K2 . = . 140x128x158mm 146x154x160mm w/fans (WxLxH)
D14 = . 140x130x160mm 140x158x160mm w/fans
TC14 = 140x134x160mm 140x159x171mm w/fans
SB-E. = 155x105x164mm 170x130x170mm w/fans
Extreme 155x105x164mm 155x130x165mm w/fans Reason it's smaller is 140mm fan vs 150mm fan.

K2, D14 & TC14 are about same except for TC14 140mm fans & 31mm RAM clearance stack up to 171mm (my R2 is 165mm clearance and TC14 fits)

SB-E is widest by 15mm. Even wider with TY-150 fan = 170.

Extreme with TY-143 fans is still 155mm

You get some lovely fans with the D14. Personally prefer the look of the D14 to all the others except maybe the K2, but it's just preference.

I would get the D14, simply because I own the original one and I love the quality it has about it. Having PWM fans would be nice, I just run mine at 1300RPM and it's quiet enough for me. At 1000RPM it's no louder than my pc with all fans turned off, can just hear vibrations humming from my hard drives and motherboard I think.

The Silver Arrow comes with all the mounts you need? Has the best fans and the best heatsink? If it fits, it's almost the same price as the D14 without needing mounting kits and only £10 over your original budget. I'd get one if I didn't have a decent cooler already.

All but D14 SE2011 come with all mounts ;)
Phanteks TC14 fans are not PWM but come with PWM adapter and Y splitter so you can run them PWM.

Thank you all, and thanks doyll for the measurements that's putting some context to my decision and is something I should have done to start off with.

K2 is about £70 including delivery.
Silver Arrow is out for me due to the width (otherwise would have been perfect!)
Phanteks is slightly higher.
Noctua is expensive however it pretty much has what I want, smallest dimensions from that list and PWM fans.

Damn I hate Noctua for not providing the mounting kit for free.

Edit: Anyone want to step in last minute and save me?

Not being biased (I swear), but it's the K2. It has PWM, it's quiet and the size difference between it an the D14 is so small it's not worth consideration :)

And for the love of God, will you just look at it compared to the Noctua :D

Seeing as you're so worried about the SB-E being too big then don't buy that, regarding the TC14PE forget that as it's probably still too big and is slightly noisier, if you want to pay more for less perfomance and arguably uglier looks then buy the NH-D14, now if you want what seems to be the best option for you then buy the K2. Also, whilst your mobo has a 4 pin PWN header I would be surprised if it won't run 3 pin fans and adjust their speed too, even my old Gigabyte mobo did that. I aren't biased by the way as I bought an SB-E.

Measure from center of CPU to GPU. If you have 80mm Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme will fit.

What are you on about the height for??? Your R4 has 20mm more cooler clearance then my R2 and I have the Phanteks in mine.

I'm using the Alpenföhn K2 Mount Doom and I idle between 30 -35c at 4.2ghz on a i5 3570k
Fan speeds are both below 600rpm so it's pretty much silent.

It fits within a Define mini btw.

K2 is pricey when taking delivery into account.
Although silver arrow would just about fit, it's too wide for my liking.
Although the Phanteks will also fit, I'd prefer the more compact of the mega coolers.

I'm probably being ocd about this but I don't want to have any regrets.

I don't understandl
K2 is cheaper than others and all had same delivery charge.
As for "compact" K2, D14 & TC14 are only 5mm difference front to back. K2 is 6mm wider. TC14 is taller because of 140mm fan over ram.
