Is there a standard image resolution when you get 35mm film developed onto a CD, as many high street shops offer?

And the key question: if there is, will it be a crappy resolution or something with a good bit of detail?

The question is, what do you want the images for? The one's I have done super quick at Boots provided jpeg images of about 650k-1000kbytes, at 1840 x 1232 in dimension. Is this enough? I was looking around most of the high street places last year and that was about as good as it gets unless you want to pay a premium at a certion 'photo' chainstore. This size, for me at least was okay for quick and dirty 6x4 prints, with a minimal amount of cropping, and also web use.

If you want more, you have to go to specialist places like www.peak-imaging.com where you can get develop and scan for about £7. This should net you a disk with jpegs of about 6mb on it according to their site, which is not to be sneezed at for the money. :) Of course they offer increasingly larger scans for increasingly larger amounts of cash.

Of course, nowadays, as you may have noticed in a thread about Kenya, I scan my own. It's the only way to be sure. ;) :D

Can you use something like a nikon coolscan to scan negatives right after using a roll of film? never got my head around it!

MRK... Nope. You still have to get them processed. It's the light from the LEDs in the scanner. Plays havoc with your negatives otherwise. ;)
