Wow, well first things first I was pleasantly surprised to see that the DVD-ROM in the 360 I recently bought appears to be region free (unless its about to lock up on me without warning me first!).

However, is it me or is the general playback of films etc actually rather crappy?! I have never seen such grainyness or generally poor picture quality from a DVD player before. I trust the HD-DVD player is better? Can someone try a normal DVD in the HD player and see if it is better than the built in DVD-ROM for playback?

Odd, the 360 DVD playback is generally rated as being pretty good

What display/connection/DVD's are you using?

I am using the HD Component Cables from the Premium pack connected to a Dell 2405FPW TFT running @ 1080i if that makes any sense to anyone.

i believe with the dell monitor you have you can run 1920x1080 progressive which is 1080p for dvd playback and gaming?

Hmm same set up as mine and its pretty good. Sure its got the usual flaws from playing a standard dvd on a 1900x1200 screen but other than that from 4 or 5 feet it looks very good. Personally I dont think the dell is that great a screen for dvd playback.

I always have mine set to fill to on the dell as I hate the black bars.

I've found the DVD playback via component on our HDTV to be pretty poor, had a lot of noise on it via component @480p.

I have used DVD playback on my old non-360 xbox via component on the Dell 2405FPW and quite frankly it poops all over it. The playback is 10x better on the old xbox than the 360! Also, dvd playback thru the PC on the Dell is faultless as well I have found. I supposed I should jus think about maybe trying out a VGA cable at some point. 1080p is not an option I can select with my current set up.

**EDIT** It may be worth noting that the playback of files from the HDD are perfectly fine. It is ONLY the playback of DVDs that has a poorer quality to them.

What make is the DVD drive? I wish I got a multi-region one (although the drive I got is pretty quiet unlike other 360's).

Get yourself the HD-DVD drive for the 360, im waiting for more stock to come into the country but having seen a mates it blows everything out of the water.
HD films are miles ahead of DVD, and it plays standard DVD too with far better quality then the standard 360 drive.

Mine is a Hitachi DVD-ROM

Basically, assuming you have the update for the 360 (which is far better than the older firmware, sorry I didnt check to see if your 360 is online) then VGA is FAR better.

Component does NOT scale DVD up in resolution, so it is only 480P (the means basically 720x480) get a VGA, and use 1920x1200. Then you will find a MASSIVE improvement.

I'd have to agree, if you want the 360 to upscale a normal dvd then your only choice is to use vga.

TBH the problem is more to do with the Dell and how it handles the Component Video inputs then scales it.

Outputing in 1080p via VGA should indeed offer a massive improvement
