Eidos has confirmed that it plans to release Tomb Raider Anniversary on Xbox 360 as a series of downloadable episodes starting in September.

The content - Xbox Live's first ever serialisation of a full retail game - will be made available for owners of Tomb Raider Legend to purchase through Xbox Live Marketplace.

In September "Episodes 1 & 2" will be offered along with a free training mission ("Croft Manor"). The following two episodes will arrive "shortly afterwards".

Eidos then plans to release a full retail version of Tomb Raider Anniversary "later in the year" that will put it within reach of gamers who didn't buy Legend.

Tomb Raider Legend owners will have to pay 2400 Microsoft points (GBP 20.40 / EUR 27.91 / USD 29.99) for all four episodes.

Jane Cavanagh, chief executive of Eidos' parent company SCi, said the episodic approach was part of the publisher's strategy to grow its presence in online and digital distribution.

"Lara has always been at the forefront of technology and this world-first initiative with Microsoft really highlights that fact. Ultimately we also intend to make the title available at retail so that it reaches the maximum possible audience," Cavanagh said in a statement.

Not a bad price really. Me thinks this is a bit of an experiment by the industry to see how us folk deal with a download only full retail game.

It does feels like the sort of game I might fancy in 'bits' but I think I'll wait for the retail release and get it on rental.

As for needing to own TR: Legend, I'm guessing they're using assets off the disk to cut down on the download size?

Quite happy about this, wanted to play the game but it's not out on a format I own (laptop wouldn't be suitable).

The 360 HDD isn't big enough to make digital content distribution for full games something they could do often. Nice offer for people who have TR:Legend though. If Microsoft wanted to go down the digital distribution route seriously with the 360 they should have made the HDD 120 GB (or even bigger, I can get a 250 GB drive for my PC for under £50) from day one.

Might be tempted, but I sold TRL a while back and Im not sure I could be bothered to buy it back just for this. Would have liked it more to be release just as a classic priced retail game.

Have to echo the sentiments that if MS plan to do this often, the hard drives are way overpriced for the storage they offer.

I don't like the idea of them releasing part 1 & 2 and not the rest straight away. Why not release the whole game at the same time? I don't want to complete levels 1 and 2 and not be able to continue until Eidos decide otherwise.

However, as a release of a game it's a great idea and a welcome one from me. I reckon it will be £30, so it's not too bad.

I will definitely get it, but I will be playing the PS2 version first.

Microsoft made a mistake when they opted for 20gb laptop HDD's as the price escalated on the smaller space HDD just after MS began manufacturing. As a result the HDD retains its high price despite low space.
It does annoy me that they haven't swapped it for a 60gb one, or changed the 20gb ones in shops you can buy to 60gb ones and just give 20gb ones away with the Premium.

That's not too bad then, you'll be able to buy it from a shop.

to those who say it doesnt have a big enough HDD, as the OP has said you need to have TR:L which runs the exact same engine as anniversary so presumaly its just a case of donwloading the maps and perhaps a few new models. I bet it wont be much more than a 100mb.

Maps, AI, Models, Textures, Sound, Music, Physics.
It will be more than 100mb.

Look at how big Modifications are for Battlefield 2 or Half-Life 2.
