360 HD-DVD drive to cost £199??

Does it matter, if you want to play them surely you would but a separate player as it will be higher quality than a games console.

I heard when the PS3 is released in Europe around March, the xbox 360s will come with a HD-DVD and will not cost much more than their current price tag.

Nothing official, just something i heard..

what are others thoughts?

Doubt that would happen personally, games will certainly not be made for the HD-DVD drive, and they cost a lot of money. I can not see bar them releasing a £450 version with it built in them being able to get the price low enough.

The consoles need to sell to minimal loss for them to be profitable in the long term, adding £200 more loss per console is by no means economically viable.

yeah, didn't think it could be right.

slightly off topic: aren't the newer 360s meant to be getting a slightly better CPU? Anyone know when if this is correct?

see this earlier £199 seems a lot but as it also has a 40gb HDD in it by all accounts it isnt "that" bad i guess

That would make some sense, as if they put an additional hdd in with it, it would kill two birds with one stone (increase 360's storage for downloads as well as adding hd dvd support).

The £199 price isn't bad for the drive on it's own, considering the fact that it is a new type of drive, and the standalone PC HD-DVD drives probably won't be much cheaper to begin with.

HD-DVD/Blu-Ray are both "wait and see" for me. I'm not really bothered what price it is released at on launch as I'm unlikely to buy it until the movies are coming thick and fast on HD format.

On the other forums, where this news has also been posted, the US kiddies are screaming and shouting about the converted US prices (though as we always know it's never 1-to-1 conversions).

Not too bad then.....Can't say i'm gonna rush out and buy one though.....Do you reckon the actual playback on these things are gonna be as good as a standalone player?

Has M$ ruled out HD-DVD games? Because i don't see the point otherwise

I've never heard about a 40GB HDD being included, is this true?

If the above article is correct, then it makes perfect sense for MS to release a HD-DVD drive that can only be used with the Xbox 360. If you can buy a Premium X360 with an add-on HD-DVD drive for as little as £375, that would attract many potential HD-DVD customers. Since it needs the Xbox 360 to function, it will probably mean more Xbox 360 sales as a standalone HD-DVD player would probably cost as much or even more. But with this package, you would get the player as well as a console for the same price.

If it has good playback capabilities, then a Premium console with the HD-DVD drive included costing £400 or less would be competitive to both the PS3 and other dedicated HD-DVD players.

The HD-DVD on its own costing £199 is not as attractive though.

To bring the Xbox 360 up to a similar spec to the PS3 you're going to have to spend around £530 (premium + wifi adaptor + HD-DVD drive). I guess the bonus of being able to choose what componets you want and the 360 being out now make up for that though. :)

I reckon Microsoft might release an Xbox 360 premium premium system with all this junk in one package too.

thank god it wasn't built in, At least MS has given us a choice instead of trying to push a format down our throats for their own benfits like another company i know. ;)

I wouldn't buy it anyway i only want to play games on a games console

If your going to invest in a new technology such as HD-DVD then surely you would want it to be at least quiet, and i really can't see the point in HD-DVD on a 360 given how loud it is.

Much better in my opinion to wait for stand alone player to reach £199. I reckon this will happen within 6 months. Someone like Umax will do it first i reckon :)
