I'm in a bit of a quandary, my 40" died.

I want a 50" plasma and I want it to excel in the 2D SD and HD area.

My issue is with the current 3D tech not being 'up-to-scratch' and the rumours of it being replaced or phased out.

Should I pay £1,000+ for a none 3D TV or would that be silly and I should just get a £1,000+ TV with 3D?

This is by no means my own conclusion, but from what I've heard from numerous sources (HDTVtest.co.uk being the primary), the only 3D plasmas worth a damn are Panasonic's stuff. The technology's still gimmicky though and I wouldn't go for it either just yet.

the tech isn't old enough for them to of brought anything worth having out yet, give it atleast 2-3 years for the tech to be out in the general public... buy now and you'll find you'll have something in comparrison to a ZX-81 compared to the amiga. wait 2-3 years atleast for the amiga equivelent to be released

infact... what am i saying, if you hold out it'll take longer for them to bring the better stuff out for when i buy in 2-3 years ^^

So what do I do right now?

I need a TV as my old one is kaput! Talk about rubbish timing. :(

I've a Panny 50" VT20 3D/Plasma. I bought this model for picture quality first, and am very pleased with it, especially with SD content. If you're happy with the picture quality and other features of a TV you can't go far wrong as 3D is optional and doesn't affect other areas of the sets performance.!

I guess I could buy a topline 2D 50" and then in a year or two adopt 3D when it matures.

I'll have to have a think now, especially with all the new 3D tech releases around the corner... another month and my decision would more than likely change!

I could get a ~40" stop-gap until then and sell it on ebay, or is that just throwing money away?

I agree with Marl, I purchased the Panasonic P42V42 (non 3D) for the picture quality and it's great. The non 3D choice saved me ~£400.

i'd also have to say go with top line 2D for now, in a year sell it but try stayin away from Ebay

*chuckles with another post in thought*

on a serious note, you'd easy find a sale for a fantastic TV only 1 year old with only £100 or so knocked off the price

even if you did use Ebay the chances are you may even get higher price than you paid for it lol thats if using Ebay where the idiots numbers are greater than average, earlier i noticed a graphics card on ebay had a bid on that was £20 cheaper at a number of online stores lol

3D without glasses has been previewed a number of times. If 3D is going to become more than a niche gadget then that's where it has got to go.

So, what I'm saying is (IMO) don't go out looking specifically for a 3D TV when what you really want is picture quality. If a great TV also happens to have 3D, then great. If not...meh.

If you really want excellence in performance then you should seriously consider booking a professional TV calibration. This will make a bigger difference than jumping from a mid-level to top-of-the-range TV.
