Is this possible or is my computer broken?

mpg.jpg

Went out for a drive along the side of Loch Lomond yesterday with a friend, 5th gear most of the way, roughly 60-70mph most of the time.

When I started to come back the way I flicked through the computer and found I was getting 47mpg (apparently). Compared to my usual 33mpg I pointed out this was diesel like mileage to my (obviously) female friend who then suggested "Maybe you filled up with diesel instead of petrol?" Well it was nice for her to offer a theory, but perhaps you have a better one? :p

Aw bless her cotton socks! :p

Impressive if it's accurate! And theres no reason why it wouldn't be I suppose...

See normally I do a good mix of town and motorway driving on the way to work, although my motorway drive is only about 5 miles, but the highest I'd ever had before was around 39mpg on the motorway... Oh well I'm not complaining, just a little suspicious :p

Lol and here I am happy when I get into the 30's. :p If I keep 75mph on motorway than I should get about 31mpg.

Thats absolutely apalling, I get 37mpg at 75 from a 3 litre 24v engine. No wonder Triumph went by the wayside if they were building engines that inefficient.

Ford were making engines just as inefficient in the 70's. So were most companies actually.

I never got my 1979 1.1 Fiesta to do better than 30mpg.

Err it was a performance engine for the time. It was much better economy than what the Rover P6 3500 got for example! Try comparing it to other engines of the time and you will find that it wasn't that bad for the power it produced.

Mk1 Escort Mexico, 1.6L, the average mpg is 27 on it. And that is from an 86bhp 1.6, so in comparison is the Sprint that much worse?

My Honda only gets 30-31mpg sat at 70-80mph.

I'm sure its possible, my Fabia diesel averages about 55 mpg overall, but on a couple of long, gentle runs i've had it a 70 mpg.

I was thinking about raising the compression on my motor from 9 to 11, didnt realise it'd help mpg as well as power though :)

What engine? 9 is pretty low. You'd need to adjust the timing and possibly run higher octane

Have to say that my 330s trip computer is almost always around 10% optimistic on fuel consumption, so maybe you're isn't quite spot on. All the same, good going.

When I was younger I had a VW Scirocco GTi which overread by 50%. Once achieved 66mpg in it (yeah right). Still, a genuine 44mpg was pretty good back then for a 1.8i injection with aerodynamics of a brick.

You have it easy with your high compression. :p

Hmm... on a long distance run, you'd have the edge on speed and acceleration but with fuel economy I might just over take you as you're going into the Petrol station :p

I like my 340 miles to a tank!!

47 seems very possible to me.

If I was very gentle with my old Evo she would do about 27mpg on a run and thats with lame 3.5k revs@70 gearing :)
