480 GTX SLI upgrade?

I disabled my custom fan profile and decided to run the gauntlett with BF3 for 30 mins with just the Nvidia profile taking care of matters. All I got was a gentle whirr, and both cards hit 93c.
Obviously I won't let that happen again, it was just a death run. The cards are warranted for three years so I would rather test them now
Hitting some huge numbers in 3dmark11 too, especially with both cards at 800mhz.

Watercooling certainly is the best way to tame sli'd 400 series cards, you can have good board spacing, case airflow use game frame limiters etc, but the noise from them is pretty loud if you want to keep temps down on stock cooled cards. Aftermarket coolers is pretty much a non starter due to their size. Hence i may get rid of my pair and get a gtx 680.

83c top card 25 min BF3 run (pretty much all of Operation Swordbreaker).
Perfectly acceptable. I even shot a video of it with the camera sat right on top of the PC.
What's hilarious is that's only around 6c hotter than my 7970 got, and no noisier.
Very surprised, but then after running 295 single PCBs in quad SLI I should have known this would be a lot more tolerable.

Andy get those bad boys upto 850 mine run it all day although im actually at 880 right now on air they just scale so well with overclocking have to agree about drivers the nvidia ones are excellent i love the new 300 series found that in bf3 its best to let the game use default nvidia settings with these 300 drivers but in game tell bf3 to render 1 frame ahead max with the my 480,s its very smooth just every now and then i will dip into 30 fps but it will do it from 60 fps so you really feel it.
Furmark synthetically puts a graphics card under a load it will never see during normal use. It does not test the RAMDAC or the VRAM, so is merely a demonstration in stupidity.
But what else should one expect from you?
As for whether they are being used properly? 99% on both GPUs would quite probably be about all they can do correct?
Actually furmark is maximum stress testing for GPUs to test for overclock stability and maximum temperatures, just like Linx is used to test CPU overclocks.
Simply running a game does not normally stess your hardware enough to accurately verify maximum temperatures or stability.
I suppose you think that Linx is stupid too then because it puts the CPU under a load that it will never see during normal use

Really? then how come I could run MSI Kombustor all day on my 6970 Lightning @ 1000mhz but when I loaded up Crysis 2 it immediately locked up my system?
As for verifying maximum temperatures? I would rather do that in the real world using, you know? real games and applications.
As for LinX? again, I have managed 30 runs on that without a hiccup. Then you fire up Handbrake and go to encode a movie and Explorer crashes.
Now surely you realise why the 480 gets to hot in Furmark as opposed to say, a 570, yes?
It's because Nvidia realised that there were this bunch of really silly people out there using a synthetic application to unrealistically show how hot a GPU can get. AMD realised it too.
So, they simply put thermal throttles on their cards that down clock them when Furmark is ran so that they can not be exploited.
See also - 7950, 7970, 680, any card released since the 480.
So basically once you know that and you can understand it it comes down to one question.
If some one told you to put your head in an oven would you do it? Or, would you weigh up the facts and realise that it's completely stupid?

correct me if im wrong, but im pretty sure it was a current throttle and not a thermal throttle that was introduced to all modern cards. If it was purely about keeping the heat output under control then the already in-place thermal throttling would have taken care of it quite amply.
You likely have something else wrong in your system if its still crashing so frequently despite being stable for 30 linx runs.
MSI Kombustor isnt as good as furmark. I can run MSI kombustor stable all day at 1000 Mhz on my 560 Tis, but furmark will crash in less than a minute.

You're perfectly right, Furmark was also being used to "show" how much power these new cards could use.
When of course in real life and under normal circumstances the card would never use that much power.
It's pretty much the same reason that modern cars have rev limiters. Because some idiot was stupid enough to get in a car and hold down the pedal until the engine blew up.
Yes, I had a bad overclock. LinX does not do everything that every application and or program will do. It is not the Windows Kernel.
Just like Furmark does only what it does. It does not use the same engine as Crysis 2, so will behave differently.
As I explained to you, I could run MSI Kombustor all night long cheesy porn music and all. As soon as I loaded up Crysis 2 it just locked up the PC and then I had to pull the power out.
And it wasn't just me either, go and read the review thread I created for that card. Several others had the same issue, with everything apart from Crysis 2 working perfectly well under high clocks.

LinX would run through perfectly fine. It runs Linpack (sic) operations on your CPU.
If I ran Prime 95 it would bomb immediately. In the end I settled on 3900mhz (on a Phenom 2 940) and it was perfectly stable. It ran through LinX fine and for three months before I upgraded to my I7 950 I had no issues at all.
Run Prime 95? it would just get very hot and bomb out.
There isn't a synthetic app on the market that will do absolutely everything you do with your computer. That's why whenever I overclock anything now I don't even bother running such apps, I just go about my day to day business and wait to see if it crashes.
Edit. And you can put Prime 95 in the same category as Furmark. I literally melted the capacitors on my old motherboard. Was totally stupid, as the overclock had been on for around two months. Curiosity got the better of me.
If prime95 crashes and not linx id say memory was unstable. Btw nice temps on that sli andy mine runs sooooo hot, the first card
If my CPU has been linx / prime 95 / orthos stable, its never crashed in anything else, and thats the same for just about every enthusiast overclocker that uses those programs to stress test their CPUs. Also my CPU can be stable in every other thing, yet still crash in Linx.
You must have had something else wrong probably the ram as Vir suggested.
